Now that the hustle and bustle of E3 is behind us, you would have thought that the flow of major announcements would have dried up.

Not when it comes to Sony, who have just announced a new model of the PS4 with a 1Tb hard drive – dubbed the 1Tb PS4 Ultimate Player Edition.

Announced on the official PlayStation Blog, the news comes a few weeks after Microsoft revealed that they were releasing a 1Tb Xbox One console. This is great news for gamers, as more storage space has been one of the most requested features of both consoles since they launched. However there has been no official word yet on what pricing will be, and if the current 500Gb PS4 will see a price drop similar to the Xbox One.

The 1Tb PS4 Ultimate Player Edition will be released on July 15 in select European and PAL territories, but a US release date is expected to be announced soon.

On that note, it has also been revealed that there is a tweaked version of the PS4 500Gb on the horizon. Announced in a company press release, the biggest change of note is that the new model will be 10% lighter and use 8% less power than the current model. The models will be available in “Jet Black” and “Glacier White”. But what is interesting is that judging from the pictures in the press release, the console’s glossy finish has been dropped in favour of a more subtle matte look.

This new 500Gb model will start shipping in Japan in “late June 2015“, but is planned to be released to all other major markets afterwards. The suggested retail price for the new 500Gb model is $399, but considering the announcement of the new 1Tb model, it is likely the actual price will be lower or the console will be bundled with additional games or controllers.

Now that both Sony and Microsoft have upped their consoles’ storage sizes, and announced dozens of highly-anticipated games at E3, it looks like the eighth generation of consoles have finally come into their own.
