On the surface, it may seem like April 2024 is a bit of a sleepy month for new video game releases. This is largely thanks to a lack of new titles coming from existing IPs from basically any major studio, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some games worth being excited about. April 2024 may wind up being a very important month when it comes to fresh IP and new titles that no gamer has seen before, with a lot of major studios putting some brand-new ideas out there and seeing what sticks. Some of the games hitting consoles and PCs in April may even set the stage for huge new franchises.

Stellar Blade

Sony is finally bringing a fresh new exclusive to the PS5 with Stellar Blade. The action-adventure title offers players a captivating blend of sci-fi and hack-n-slash combat. Players assume the roles of seasoned pilots navigating through star systems that look beautifully detailed, to say nothing of the character designs which have already been either maligned or drooled over depending on who’s looking. Beyond its engaging gameplay, Stellar Blade‘s narrative unfolds as players delve into the mysteries of ancient civilizations, and any new exclusive content to the PS5 is welcome at this point considering the lacklustre state of the 2024 release schedule right now.

Stellar Blade is launching on April 26th exclusively for PlayStation 5.

No Rest For The Wicked

Moon Studios, the development studio behind the hit indie franchise Ori, is finally back with No Rest For The Wicked, a game that the studio is claiming will reinvent the action RPG sub-genre. Set in a cursed town trapped in eternal night, the game delivers a spine-chilling tale that appears to trade in the cute playfulness so often on display in the Ori games for something far darker. This studio has shown a knack for innovative mechanics and soul-wrenching stories in the past, and hopefully, this title will only continue to build on that reputation.

No Rest For The Wicked is launching into Early Access on April 18th.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes

April 2024 is looking like a solid month for JRPG fans with Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes perhaps being the most-hyped JRPG to release this year after Persona 3 Reload. In classic JRPG fashion, the game transports players to a vibrant fantasy world ripe with magic and intrigue. It features hand-drawn visuals and a combat system that will surely scratch the itch of any players looking for something that feels fresh and simultaneously reminiscent of the genre’s 80s and 90s glory days, something even further cemented by the fact that this game’s development is led by Yoshitaka Muriyama, the creator of the Suikoden series.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes is launching on April 23rd for all platforms.

SaGa: Emerald Beyond

Continuing the trend of JRPGs for April 2024’s video games, Square Enix has SaGa: Emerald Beyond as the latest entry in the legacy series. The franchise that began as the Final Fantasy Legend line of games was dormant in the West for some time before finally seeing a reappearance with SaGa: Scarlet Grace a few years back. And now Emerald Beyond is here to give players nonlinear gameplay, branching narrative paths, and some reality-warping turn-based combat.

SaGa: Emerald Beyond is launching on April 25th for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch.

Sand Land

Akira Toriyama’s incredible legacy continues with a video game adaptation of his early 2000s manga Sand Land. The game thrusts players into a post-apocalyptic wasteland a ‘la Mad Max but littered with characters that are unmistakably Toriyama’s designs. As players navigate treacherous terrain and engage in intense combat, they must scavenge for resources and forge alliances to endure. Sand Land‘s emphasis on exploration and resource management looks familiar but also fresh with its visual style and vibrant story. Toriyama apparently did have some involvement with this game, overseeing its development, so hopefully, it’s a beautiful sendoff for one of the most impactful creators of the past three decades.
