5 Possible Storylines That Mortal Kombat Might Explore After Khaos Reigns

Mortal Kombat 1 has reset the franchise once more, going far into the depths of the multiverse. Unlike venturing the 6 realms and focusing on the Mortal Kombat tournaments, the multiversal threats arrive in both Mortal Kombat 1 and its Khaos Reigns expansion storylines, something that might change as the tale of Fire God Liu Kang and his timeline dashes forward.

Mortal Kombat: 1 Khaos Reigns introduces another Titan that’s been eager to dominate all timelines, later eliminated by Noob Saibot. However, this absolutely isn’t the end for the new era of Mortal Kombat, and here are a few ways upon which the story might continue in the next MK1 expansion or most likely, MK2.

1. The End of The Multiverse By Titan Onaga

After referencing the Dragon King’s army in Mortal Kombat 1, one would assume that the story is going to recreate the Deadly Alliance and Deception arcs. However, the multiverse seals the idea away for later use, after revealing the Komidogu items in the Khaos Reigns expansion. So with Titan Havik out of the picture now, could we get our Dragon King Onaga’s return, please?

Ed Boon, the co-creator of the Mortal Kombat franchise has boosted the fire on this storyline theory by posting a picture of MK: Deception and the fact that they might “bring it back” on X. If there’s one being that can fully harness the power of the Komidogu items and destroy all timelines until one remains with them, it’s Onaga. Mortal Kombat 2 might end this multiverse madness with this possible idea.

2. General Shao’s Rebellion

If all is done with the multiverse and the next Mortal Kombat storyline isn’t going for it, then the uprising of General Shao against Mileena could be the next big occasion. General Shao is destined to become Shao Kahn, no matter how considerably Liu Kang meddles with the timeline. This could later turn into the next Mortal Kombat tournament to recreate the original story of MK2.

The General Shao rebellion in the next Mortal Kombat storyline could also result in his iconic invasion of the Earth, which we last saw in Mortal Kombat 9. All I hope is that the narrative follows a solid path and another Titan doesn’t show up to ruin the experience.

3. Shujinko’s Konquest

We discussed the possible return of the Dragon King Onaga in the next Mortal Kombat storyline, but what if he’s actually resurrected by Shujinko rather than Shang Tsung? Just like how Shujinko followed Damashi’s command in MK: Deception, a sweet return of the Konquest mode is warmly welcome, featuring the Shaolin warrior fetching all Komidogu items for Onaga.

In fact, the Invasions game mode in Mortal Kombat 1 plays as if NetherRealm Studios have wanted to reinvent the Konquest mode this way. However, the vast open world of MK: Deception‘s Konquest is beyond Invasion’s limits.

4. Rise of Shinnok

After teasing Shinnok’s amulet in Mortal Kombat 1, the return of the fallen Elder God Shinnok sounds quite inevitable in one of the upcoming storylines. Now it could be a type of multiverse Titan that invades Liu Kang’s timeline, which is typical for MK right now. Or, it could be the sorcerer Quan-Chi’s master plan to lay the path of the Elder God’s return.

5. Lin Kuei Cyber Initiative

By revealing Sektor and Cyrax wearing Iron-Man suits instead of the cyber initiative program, one could see the yellow armored Lin Kuei turn against the Grandmaster from a mile away. But Bi-Han is smart, given his sense of ambition to unleash the current main Mortal Kombat timeline from Liu Kang’s influence, he would do anything to bend his knees in the next storylines.

Do you know who doesn’t turn their back against you when you’re fighting Liu Kang? Cyber soldiers. Bi-Han is the man that thinks of himself as gifted for having the Noob Saibot powers, even if Sektor, the love of his life demands otherwise. The Cyber Lin Kuei program is the smallest price to pay for the former Sub-Zero’s army.
