Crystal Dynamic’s Marvel’s Avengers shows an abandoned Mjolnir in several of its trailers and one fan was brave enough to ask about it. Surprisingly, the question got an in-depth response from Travis Willingham, who plays Thor, during a Marvel’s Avengers Twitter Q&A. The question states that unworthy Thor storyline has been done before and asks how the game will handle it.

Q: We see an image of Thor's hammer abandoned. The story of Thor feeling unworthy has been explored before – what makes this version unique/different?
A: Cap is the only human Thor thinks might actually be worthy to hold Mjolnir, and he failed him. (1/3)

Willingham’s answer is based on the idea that Captian America died in the most recent gameplay Avengers demo. This demo has the Avengers fighting Taskmaster on the Golden Gate Bridge, which is the prologue scene for the game. The fight has unfortunate results when the Avenger’s own helicarrier causes massive destruction triggering the team to disband and Captain America’s supposed death.

Willigham’s answer follows the logic that Captain America was the only human worthy to hold Mjolnir but he failed. Now the Avengers are constantly arguing without Captian America as their uniting force and Thor feels as though he can’t live up to Captian America. The end of the Tweet simply says Thor will make an interesting choice.

All of this infers that Thor thinks himself unworthy and leaver Mjolnir behind. His choice could also result in bringing Captian America back. What would an Avenger’s game be without him? Thor has been unworthy before in the comics. One example is Unworthy Thor, which follows Thor’s search for a new hammer after Jane Foster becomes worthy of Mjolnir.

In Avenger’s Endgame, Thor is physically but mostly emotionally destroyed after the events of Avenger’s Infinity Warย but he is still worthy to hold the hammer. Avenger’s Endgame also had Captian America Wield the hammer finally showing that he is worthy after several Avengers movies. It will be interesting to see what storyline the game will adapt.

Several other questions were addressed during the Q/A but they did not give much more insight into the game. Marvel’s Avengers releases on May 15, 2020, for Xbox One, PS4, PC and Google Stadia.
