Star Citizen, the highly anticipated space trading and combat game from Cloud Imperium Games, has officially reached $250,000,000 in funding. This milestone comes eight years since the game’s announcement, and five years since the game’s initial release date. Hitting this goal was thanks to the game’s recent anniversary sale, bumping up cash flow for November.

The last milestone for the funding campaign was hit back in November 2018, reaching $200,000,000 from two million backers. This alone was a huge milestone, but the extra $50,000,000 has been an achievement of its own.  Despite all of this funding though, the game is still nowhere near finished. After eight years of development, the game remains to only be playable as an Alpha, with Alpha 3.7 having released in October.

That’s not to say everyone’s given up hope though. The game continues to bring in steady revenue clearly, but the community is still very much alive and thriving. The games official subreddit and has very consistent and thoughtful posts from the community, the same being said for the game’s official forums. The developers don’t appear too worried either, as there appears to be a promise for post-launch content. Cloud Imperium’s CEO has also stated that there’s more than enough funding to complete Squadron 42, the game’s standalone singleplayer experience. The funding from that release would do more than enough to fund the completion of Star Citizen.

We’ll have to see how their promises hold up when the game officially launches. Way back in 2015, we reported on the fact that Star Citizen would have a AAA budget. This achievement helps to prove that statement, whether that’s for better or worse is up to you. If you have been watching the development of Star Citizen (which you can see part of here), what do you think of Alpha 3.7’s content? Do you think the game will live up to player expectations? Let us know, and stay tuned for more news regarding your favorite games, movies, TV shows, and comics!
