Ghostbusters actor Rick Moranis is reportedly in talks to return to acting, according to Disney Insider. Whilst the report states that these talks are at an early stage, it is nonetheless giving fans hope that they may see Moranis return to the big screen.
The talks with Moranis are linked to a, and I quote, “legecyeqeul” to Honey, I Shrunk The Kids, in which Moranis would return as hapless inventor Wayne Szalinski who’s creation manages to shrink his and the neighbor’s kids.
Whilst the report states Moranis would be coming out of retirement for the role it is worth noting that, by his own admission, he isn’t retired. Having taken a large step back from Hollywood, Moranis has always insisted he is merely more selective about which projects he’ll be involved with.
“I’m interested in anything that I would find interesting. I still get the occasional query about a film or television role and as soon as one comes along that piques my interest, I’ll probably do it,” he told Hollywood Reporter when asked why he didn’t return to the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot.
New Honey, I Shrunk The Kids?
Yep. The legacy-sequel-reboot train is in motion. The plot will see a return to Rick Moranis’ family thirty years after the original, with Josh Gad of Frozen fame playing an older Nick Szalinski, Wayne’s son. The apparent premise of the film is, well, a little grim.
Aware that the family ties have loosened over time but seemingly afraid to confront anyone directly. He has been tinkering alone in his attic for decades, dealing with the grief of losing his wife. When we first meet him, he has accidentally shrunk himself and is flying around on a shrunken drone — seemingly lost in a continuous of tinkering and experimenting that often puts himself and his family in jeopardy. He later reveals he shut himself away to try and invent a solution to help shrink Diane’s cancer but found it hard to cope when he ran out of time. His guilt and shame is palpable. Through the crisis of the kids getting shrunk, the truth emerges and the bonds begin to redevelop between him and his kids.
So, a bit of light-hearted comedy then.
The project will reportedly also see the return of original director Joe Johnston but, as of yet, there is no release date.
