When people think of anime, they tend to think of Dragonball Z or Pokemon. Bright, colourful, out of this world stuff for young children.

But anime isn’t all super powers and dramatic speeches about the power of friendship. For those who like their Japanese animation grim and bloodsplattered there is ‘Attack on Titan’. Set in a world where humanity has been reduced to a few cities surrounded by high walls, living in fear of the Titans. These humanoid monsters range from ‘looming over humans’ size to ‘taller than the walls that are supposed to keep them out’ size.

Spoiler alert: she doesn’t get saved at the last second.

It’s not the kind of anime you watch when you’re looking for something to get you out of a low mood. The protagonists’ victories are few and far between and tend to come at huge cost. Of course, that’s not to say that it’s a bad series; far from it. The critically acclaimed series has reached the level of Dragonball Z; if you ask a western non-anime fan to list the anime series they’ve heard of, Attack on Titan would probably make the list.

More to the point, of the innumerable anime series that have been created, only rare few have had official live-action adaptions made. Even rarer, is for it to be a feature length movie rather than a Japan only tv adaption.

Attack on Titan Part One will hit Japanese theatres on August 1st and will reach American shores later in the year. In anticipation of the film’s release in the west, Funimation have released an official English sub of the trailer for the movie;

According to IGN, the film will adapt the plot of the anime and manga rather than making a new one for the film. Nonetheless, there will be some significant changes; including several characters being replaced by original ones.
