It feels like forever since I first heard about Spellbreak. A friend told me about it and I found it intriguing, but I didn’t have much to think since it was still early in development back then. All of the sudden at Gamescom, the team announced that Spellbreak would release a week later on September 3rd. As you’ve deduced at this point, that day has finally come. Spellbreak, the magic-based battle royale from developer Proletariat, is now available on PC (Epic Games Store), PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. You can find the launch trailer, shown off at Gamescom last week, below.

Spellbreak looks to take the battle royale craze of run and gun, and take a new direction on it. This isn’t the first time a developer has done this, but Spellbreak’s direction is particularly interesting. You use different spells to control the battlefield, throwing various weapons at your foes and creating defenses for yourself. The limit to Spellbreak’s magical combinations is only limited by your imagination, leaving a lot of room to improve your skills. That, combined with a cartoon style that feels like it was made for Spellbreak, make for a uniquely enjoyable battle royale.

Spellbreak features cross-play, cross-progression, and cross-platform across the board. That means you and a friend can play on Nintendo Switch then have one of you transfer over to PC and still play together. Not to mention you keep all your progress. Seth Sivak, CEO of Proletariat, has more on that though:

Today marks the beginning of a new era in multiplayer gaming. The team worked incredibly hard to deliver one of the first-ever simultaneous cross-platform, cross-play, and cross-progression launches. Spellbreak’s unique combat and innovative gameplay will be available for all players to play with whoever they want, on whatever platform they want, regardless of hardware choice.”

We’re excited to see the innovative gameplay Spellbreak has on offer, and we hope you are too. Spellbreak is available for free on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. We’d love to hear your thoughts on Spellbreak’s launch. Will you be casting spells to take down your foes? Which non-shooter BR is your favorite?
