Shared cinematic universes are nothing new at this point. We’re entering the third phase of Marvel’s cinematic behemoth and DC’s own version is about to hit its stride next year. It’s pretty cool having a character from one film appear in another. Or to have events from one character’s film have an impact on another character’s film.

Still, at this point, it’s nothing new. Touch screens blew our minds when they first came out, but now you don’t even think about them. Physical keyboards are on their way to being the new equivalent of typewriters. By the same token, shared cinematic universes are pretty standard these days.

Mr Tibbles would prefer Hollywood to not get complacent.

But what if a movie shared its universe with something other than another movie? The Assassin’s Creed has taken this idea and run with it. Nerd heads already did a 360 yesterday when the first picture of Michael Fassbender in costume surfaced;

But now the Assassin’s Creed Twitter account has revealed that the movie will take place in the same universe as the games.

Hearing this may make you uneasy; video game movies are a dicey prospect as it is. What if this movie ends up just being an adaption of one of the Assassin’s Creed games? Worry not;

It’s a brand new story, w/ new characters set in our universe. It’s possible you may find some familiar faces -Aymar https://t.co/dTpDat4STS

So what does this mean beyond seeing ‘some familiar faces’? Well events in one, may have an impact on events in the other. But, perhaps more importantly, they also dropped some tidbits about what type of movie this is going to be. Most interestingly, it turns out that the Animus will be included.

Introduced in the original Assassin’s Creed game, the Animus device is used to justify some of the limitations of the game software; you weren’t physically involved in the adventures of each Assassin. You were running a simulation of it. It also allowed the game to break up the action by returning to the present day.

So what do you guys think about the games and the movies sharing a universe? Excited? Anxious? Or just bored?
