Nintendo has removed the nine-day wait system for unlocks in Super Mario Maker. The most recent patch ahead of the game’s release has scrapped the old method for delivering new item sets.

Originally, players needed to play the game for a total of nine days to have every tool available to the. The community responded quite negatively, explaining the mechanic was unnecessary and didn’t make sense. The new process works by counting the number of blocks each player has placed, once a certain number of blocks have been placed new items and sets will become available. As of now it is unclear the exact number of blocks are needed to unlock new content, NeoGaf users are reporting they are unlocking items by simply cluttering their levels with as many blocks as possible.

Mario Maker gives players the tools to create, share and play their own Mario levels.

In addition to the new delivery method, the patch has increased the total number of usable parts in the level editor, another feature that was met with a fair amount of critiquing. Additional patch notes include “Create a course scene: a small element was added” and “Various changes meant to improve the gameplay elements”.

Super Mario Maker releases today for the WiiU in celebration of gaming icon Mario’s 30th birthday.
