Mighty No. 9, the Kickstarter-backed spiritual successor to the Mega Man franchise, has a new release date: February 9, 2016 in North America. The game will be released worldwide on February 12.

Despite having a successful crowdfunding campaign initiated by well-respected Mega Man creator Keiji Inafune, Mighty No. 9 has experienced several setbacks that concerned fans and backers. Developer Comcept unexpectedly announced several development and release date delays since the 2D action-platform title reached its fundraising goals.

Definitely not Mega Man, legally speaking

Mighty No. 9 is a highly anticipated title because of its similarities to Mega Man gameplay. The game plays like a 2D platform, but has a modern twist: a colorful blend of 2D and 3D graphics. The game features a android named Beck, also known as No. 9. Beck is the ninth unit of combat robots called the Mighty Numbers. After a computer virus infects and turns the other units into adversaries, Beck is left with no choice but to fight them and find out who’s responsible for the devastation.

On September 25, Comcept unveiled a demo for Mighty No. 9 that’s only available to backers. Backers can log into the Humble Bundle website with the same email address attached to their Kickstarter or PayPal pledge and download what they call the “Special Demo Version.” The demo gives backers exclusive access to a portion of Mighty No. 9‘s Challenge Mode, which will also be included in the full version.

Watch below as Mighty No. 9 Lead Composer Manami Matsumae plays the demo for the very first time:

Mighty No. 9 will be available for the PC, Mac, Linux, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Nintendo Wii U, Nintendo 3Ds and the PlayStation Vita.
