As the gaming industry presses onward, many indie studios find value in being a part of a larger conglomerate. Studios like Psyonix which had been on their own for so long, eventually decide to settle on joining a bigger name like Epic. Even bigger than that, studio powerhouses like Bethesda getting bought by Microsoft seem almost second nature in this day and age. Yet, as indie games continue to grow on their own, so do many indie publishers. Considering the scale of such projects today, itโ€™s no wonder that Indie game developers would want to stick with that general theme. Known for Player Unknown Battlegrounds, the parent company Krafton are expanding their horizons. What better choice than Subnautica developers, Unknown Worlds Entertainment, which is only looking to go much further into space. Announced today, Krafton has acquired Subnautica developer Unknown Worlds Entertainment.

Why Did Krafton Acquire Subnautica Developer Unknown Worlds Entertainment?

Krafton Entertainment has been clever about its game development. Since the inception of PUBG, the studio has worked effortlessly to turn it into a larger franchise. With three current games in the PUBG universe and three more on the way, there’s plenty of interest in indirect sequels. It seems that theyโ€™ve been keen to notice Unknown Worlds Entertainment’s direction. While their last comment on a new game was about opening up to other worlds, this is a key signal to that goal. As Krafton would also seem interested in crafting a wider universe, the two have joined. As the Callisto Protocol heads the next step for the PUBG universe, Krafton acquiring the Subnautica developers is interesting. While it’s more than likely going to be quite some time before we see Unknown Worlds Entertainment next game, it’s sure to be even better with Krafton now backing their funding.
