There has not been a new Star Wars movie in theaters since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker, and unfortunately, it may be quite a while longer before fans see another. According to an exclusive from The Hollywood Reporter (THR), Patty Jenkins’ Star Wars movie, Rogue Squadron, has been delayed indefinitely. Jenkins and Matthew Robinson, the screenwriter, have been working on the project for Lucasfilm for over a year. The movie was originally projected to begin production next year and arrive in theaters in December of 2023. However, according to THR‘s sources, Jenkins’ schedule and commitments to other projects do not afford her the time needed to begin production on Rogue Squadron next year.
Given her commitment to the project over the last year and beyond, it is unlikely that Patty Jenkins would abandon the film entirely. During Disney’s investor day in December of 2020, Rogue Squadron was announced with Jenkins as director. This news was accompanied by a video of Jenkins explaining why she wanted to make the film. In the video, she cites her father, who was a fighter pilot, as an influence. Ultimately, she claims that she wants to make the “greatest fighter pilot movie ever made.”
THR‘s sources did not explain what commitments Patty Jenkins has and how they conflict with Rogue Squadron. However, she is currently developing Wonder Woman 3 for Warner Bros. and a Cleopatra movie for Paramount. Many assumed Jenkins would begin production on Wonder Woman 3 after Rogue Squadron, but this may have shifted.
Despite Rogue Squadron being delayed, Star Wars fans have no shortage of content coming in the future. Disney and Lucasfilm have several projects not only in development but in various stages of production. These projects include several Disney+ series like The Book of Boba Fett, Kenobi, Andor, and Ahsoka.
