The original Kao The Kangaroo was released on December 13, 2001, by the Polish development studio Tate Multimedia, which is still developing the reboot. The story followed the titular Kao, a kangaroo character, as he hopped around the world with special boxing gloves imbued with various abilities on a journey to save the world. Although it was popular in the early 2000s, the series went on an indefinite hiatus after the release of Kao the Kangaroo: Mystery of the Volcano in 2006, only recently returning to the limelight.

News of the revival slowly began to surface back in 2019 when Kao the Kangaroo: Round 2, the second game in the series, was suddenly re-released on Steam. Tate Multimedia officially announced that it would be working on a new title to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the series, giving an overview of what the game might entail and looking back on the history of the series.

Tate Multimedia confirmed that the reboot will feature both faithfully recreate the original game and features a completely new journey for players to enjoy. This includes a new story, enemies, visuals, challenges, and much more. As seen in the trailer, Kao will traverse various areas and levels, from icy zones to bushy fields, in his journey to rescue his missing sister and solve the mystery of his father.
