The Japanese gaming company Konami is up 12% in revenue according to the recently released 9-month financial reports โ that’s not a bad little money boost, all things considered. The figure roughly accumulates to about ยฅ215 billion (or $1.8 billion to you and me), and the operating profit was also on the up, with a growth of 48.8% ($1.8 billion).
Konami’s digital entertainment segment (this includes all their games) performed well and saw an increase of 6.4%, which compared to last year is an upturn of $1.3 billion. With operating profits for that area seeing a rise of 9% as well ($483 million).
The once prolific Japanese gaming company has seen a decrease in significant releases in recent years, with 2015’s Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain being the biggest name in the last 10 years to make waves in the global industry. So, the fact Konami is up 12% in revenue may leave a few of you scratching your head.
Where is Konami’s increase in revenue coming from?
There is more activity from the Japanese gaming company than first meets the eye, it seems. In the console and PC area, the reports are that Tokimeki Memorial Girl’s Side 4th Heart and Power Pro Pocket R on the Switch have seen good performances since their release. There were also great reported sales from 2020’s Momotara Dentetsu: Showa, Heisei, Reiwa mo Teiban! which also aided the financial upturn โ these aren’t precisely well-known names to many, so it comes as a surprise.
Now, on the mobile side of things, there were strong performances from the well-revered Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Links and eFootball PES 2021 right across the globe (which are fairly popular titles). While the Japanese market was dominated by Professional Baseball Spirits and Jikkyou Pawafuru Puro Yakyu, which may not come as a surprise due to their massive popularity in their home country.
So, Konami’s situation seems to be pretty good, with these lesser-known titles carrying the flame for the company quite successfully. The success might even result in us getting that huge release we’ve been waiting on for some time now. We can only hope.
