This article is over 9 years old and may contain outdated information.

The newest Heroes of the Storm battleground called “Towers of Doom” goes live this week, and it’s nothing like any moba (multiplayer online battle arena) map you’ve ever played before, which is saying something for Heroes of the Storm.

The objective in any moba is to destroy the core of the opposing team’s base, which remains the same in Towers of Doom. The common theme in Heroes of the Storm is to control objectives around the map, a concept the newest battleground runs with. The enemy team’s base is protected by an impenetrable wall that will destroy any approaching hero, leaving you incapable of entering the opposition’s base and smacking their core to dust.

To damage the enemy team’s core, players must capture one of four altars scattered across the map. When captured, the altars will rise and begin damaging the enemy team’s core. Although there are other Heroes of the Storm battlegrounds that play with the idea of having objectives damage the base, they still allow players to fight through a ring of defense to enter the base themselves. Battlegrounds Blackheart’s Bay and Sky Temple contain objectives that when controlled, attack the opposition base, but the entire game is not centered around controlling those points on the map. The strategic option to manually push down towers and attack the base is always open.

Heroes of the Storm is Blizzard’s answer to mobas. Unlike traditional games of the genre, Heroes of the Storm emphasizes objective-based games and short matches.
