With five days to go in its Fig crowd funding campaign, Psychonauts 2 has reached its $3, 300 000 funding goal. After reaching $1 million in less than 24 hours, the rest has come through and Double Fine wants to thank its backers.

Thanks for Funding Psychonauts 2!

With less than a week left, Tim Schaefer says they’ll continue to use any more fundsย until January 12th when the campaign closes:

We don’t just want to make Psychonauts 2, we want to make anย amazingย Psychonauts 2

The game made a splash last month when it was announced at the Game Awards, bringing the long-awaited sequel into the forefront of gamer’s minds once again. Now it will become a reality as Double Fine plans to release the game in 2018. The studio also promises that every little bit counts in order to make the game “better, bigger, and shinier.”

The campaign raised some criticismย and excitement all at once as it uses Fig, a crowd-funding approach that allows each backer a chance to be an investor in the game project. It remains to be seen how much these “investors” will make (if anything) on a game like this, but it is a very interesting way to approach the now crowded market of crowd-funding.

With or without Psychonauts 2, Double Fine will release a Psychonauts prequel exclusively for the VR experience. The standalone experience will be available on PlayStation VR, and in typical Double Fine and Tim Schaefer fashion, the announcement last year poked some fun at a now infamous TIME Magazine cover report and photo of Oculus Rift’s Palmer Luckey. Set between the events of the original and Psychonauts 2, In the Rhombus of Ruinย is set to be released in the second half of 2016.
