Diablo 2 was a massive game when it was released, and it appears as though it’s still big enough to warrant a new patch a decade and a half later.

Blizzard posted on the Diablo 2 forums:

This update focuses on system glitches introduced by modern operating systems. In related news, you can finally retire those old Mac PowerPCs. Included with the update is a shiny new installer for OSX.
We’ve also begun working to improve our cheat-detection and hack-prevention capabilities. There’s still work to be done, but we’re making improvements every day.

They also added that this is not the end of their improvements or patches, there will be more to come:

This journey starts by making Diablo II run on modern platforms, but it does not end there. See you in Sanctuary, adventurers.

If there’s one game that could define my early PC gaming days, it’s Diablo 2. A game that came out in June of 2000 ate up at least 300 hours of my life through late elementary school and most of the high school. In the early days of internet gaming, I was able to cleanse the world of Hell’s evil on my parents’ ancient dial-up internet for good 3-4 years.

I checked back in with the game just before Diablo 3 was released, around the last time Blizzard had patched D2. To my surprise, there were still large communities and lobbies. Time will tell if patches and action like this will carry over to other titles like Warcraft 3, but I still think it’s awesome to see the developers support such a dedicated community. This may be enough for me to give the game another whirl, I know my game disc is around here somewhere…
