The eighties were a great time for cartoon series. There’s a reason that Hollywood has so thoroughly pilfered from the eighties treasure chest when looking for stuff to remake; Transformers, Ninja Turtles and Scooby Doo are just a few of the examples of the goodies that have been remade with varying degrees of care. Well now Netflix is digging into the treasure chest and it’s pulling out giant robots in the form of the series Voltron.

‘I have a sword in one hand and my other hand is a lion. You may want to give up now…’

As with most series involving giant robots, Voltron has its origins in Japan. Based on several mecha anime, Voltron graced western screens between 1984 and 1985 and told the story of a giant robot, and its pilots, protecting the world from dangerous ‘robobeasts’. And now Netflix, in its continuing quest to have every series ever, will be working with Dreamworks to produce a new Voltron series. According to USA today;

“The popular 1980s cartoon fantasy franchise with one really cool giant robot is being introduced to a new generation with the Netflix’s animated series Voltron: Legendary Defender. Produced by DreamWorks Animation, the first 13 22-minute episodes will drop later this year, though fans will get a taste of footage Friday at WonderCon in Los Angeles.”
