Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 finishes off the trilogy as one of the MCU’s darkest and saddest films to date. Following the epic conclusion of the latest film, The Guardians return to Knowhere, where they decide to disband the team and part ways. But this isn’t necessarily the end of the saga. As is customary, Vol 3 details some additional plot points after the credits roll. Here are all the details of what happens in the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. post-credits scenes.

Warning: This article features spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3.

What Happens in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. Post Credits Scenes

Although the upcoming film ends the way it does, it doesn’t necessarily mean that there won’t be another Guardians of the Galaxy movie. As stated previously by writer-director James Gunn, the conclusion of this trilogy will be the end for the current members of the team, not the Guardians of the Galaxy as a whole. “This is the end for us, the last time people will see THIS team of Guardians.” He continues: “I just want to be true to the characters, the story, and give people the wrap-up they deserve for the story.” Fittingly, then, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 has a total of TWO post-credit scenes that tease future storylines. Let’s break them down.

Let’s Welcome the New Guardians of the Galaxy (Post Credit Scene 1)

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3
Walt Disney Studios

After we see Peter Quill return to Earth just before the start of the end credits to reunite with his Grandfather, Rocket is shown as the new captain in the newest iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy. The first post-credits scene shows Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper), Groot (Vin Diesel), Kraglin (Sean Gunn), Cosmo the Spacedog (Maria Bakalova), and Adam Warlock (Will Poulter) together in a desert, ready to take on an enemy. Rocket asks the newly assembled crew about their favorite music acts. New recruit Phyla, one of the High Evolutionary’s former child slaves, answers first with Britney Spears and Korn. Kraglin picks Garth Brooks; Cosmo the Spacedog picks The Carpenters, while Adam Warlock goes for Adrian Belew: “Both solo and his work with King Crimson.”

Rocket himself plays them a song from his Zune MP3 player that was retrieved and gifted to him by Peter Quill during the final act of the film. Rocket selects a song and plays “Come and Get Your Love” by Redbone, which is the song that kicked off the franchise and also what Peter Quill was listening to when we first meet him in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 1. “This one’s kinda special,” says Rocket. Groot doesn’t respond as he’s sleeping underneath Rocket and is awoken once they have to embark on a new mission to protect the townsfolk of the unknown desert planet they’re on. The song continues to play as the new team begins their latest adventure by battling rodent-like critters.

Star-Lord isn’t Done Yet (Post Credit Scene 2)

In the second post-credits scene, we are taken back to Missouri’s St Charles as Peter Quill and his Grandfather are having breakfast together. They’re talking about mowing the neighbor’s lawn while Peter says, “If she needs help mowing her lawn, I’ll do it, but I kind of feel like her son should help.” Peter’s Grandfather is also reading a newspaper from the St Charles Post with its front page headline titled, “Alien Abduction” with the subtitle, “Kevin Bacon Shares All.” This is obviously a direct reference to the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, which premiered on Disney+ late last year as viewers saw Drax and Mantis kidnapped Kevin Bacon from Earth to Knowhere as a Christmas present for Peter Quill.

The scene somewhat opens the door for Peter Quill as he is now living on Earth, where he might eventually be recruited for the next team-up with the Avengers once they finally unite against Kang. At the very end, the infamous line pops up stating, “The Legendary Star-Lord Will Return.” While the Guardians of the Galaxy we’ve come to know, and love are officially disbanded, things don’t quite seem to be over for Peter Quill. While we don’t know in what capacity he will return, it will only be a matter of time until the world finds out.

That wraps up our breakdown of the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. post-credits scenes. Stay tuned for more Marvel coverage on The Nerd Stash in the near future.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 is scheduled to premiere on May 5th, only in theaters.
