While the latest Zelda game offers players the chance to build all manner of different vehicles, there’s nothing quite like horse riding. It’s so quintessentially The Legend of Zelda, and it’s never felt better than in Tears of the Kingdom. Not only can you board a bunch of different horses but actively look after them too. For those who want to know how to feed horses in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom, here’s what you need to know.

Unlike its predecessor, Tears of the Kingdom starts way up in the clouds. There isn’t any horse riding to be had up there! So, you’ll have to touch grass before saddling up. When you first make it down to Hyrule terra firma, go and speak with the stable master. There he’ll explain that the stable is currently closed. There’s no set time when it becomes available to use again, but after exploring the open world for another couple of hours you’ll eventually be able to take on a quest to repair the stable.

Your Ultrahand ability will make this a simple task, opening the stable for business and allowing you to either stable horses you’ve caught/stolen or reunite with horses from Breath of the Wild.

It’s worth noting you can also scan Amiibo to get Epona, Link’s iconic horse from Zelda games gone by. Epona can also be found at the New Serenne Stable northwest of Lookout Landing.

With your horse now by your side, it’s important you make an effort to improve your relationship together. If you know animals, there’s one common ground that typically always gets them on-side — food.

As it turns out, horses absolutely love Apples, and they can be found in abundance all across Hyrule. You’re likely to have some of these in your inventory already, but otherwise, they can typically be found hanging from trees around the open world.

Once you have an Apple in hand, whip it out of your inventory and have Link hold one in his hand. Walk up to the horse and offer your tasty morsel, which will be gobbled up and appreciated with loving hearts. Well done, you’re on your way to improving the relationship between man and beast!
