Sony is aiming at Nintendo Switch’s handheld market by announcing its own remote gaming controller, currently internally labeled Project Q, during PlayStation Showcase 2023. Not much was revealed about the new device, but Sony showed off some early images of what it could look like. Project Q appears like a PlayStation 5 DualShock controller, split apart by an eight-inch screen, looking very similar to the Nintendo Switch handheld mode. The PlayStation Showcase claims that Project Q will allow players to stream games from the PlayStation 5 and play remotely.

Nintendo’s success with the Switch cannot be understated, with the console selling 125 million units worldwide. Players and critics have praised the device as a perfect hybrid of a handheld and home console, allowing gamers to play their favorite Nintendo titles on the go.

Sony’s Project Q appears to be based on the Nintendo Switch, with the two halves of the PlayStation 5 controller looking similar to a Joy-Con. The company claims it will launch the device later this year, possibly becoming a competitor to the Switch. Project Q can only stream games from the PlayStation 5 through Wi-Fi. The screen for the device will be eight inches and run games up to 1080p and 60fps. Project Q will also have the same button layouts and features a normal DualShock controller would have. The device will exclude PlayStation VR games.

In addition to Project Q, PlayStation Showcase revealed new PlayStation-style wireless earbuds. The presentation claims the new headphones use state-of-the-art technology, allowing them to connect with any smartphone automatically via Bluetooth. Sony promises the earbuds will offer lossless audio and low latency.

Sony promises more information about Project Q, and the new PlayStation earbuds will arrive at a later date. No specific release date for Project Q was announced during the PlayStation Showcase 2023.
