Ever wondered what a sentient sandcastle would look like? Well, if you didn’t, you can once you catch Sandygast in Pokemon Go. It’s the perfect companion to take out to the beach and startle beachgoers once it starts moving. And don’t let it lose its shovel. It’ll just jam something else in the vacant spot. Things don’t stop there as you can also evolve the pocket monster into an even larger castle with far more details throughout its “body.” But let’s first get Sandygast.

[Updated August 26, 2024 – included info on how to evolve and use Sandygast]

The Ghost/Ground-type Sandygast is a regular spawn in Pokemon Go. So, you should always have a chance to catch one in the wild. It’s not an overwhelming chance, but it’s possible. If it’s weak enough, you won’t even have to use up your Berries or good Poke Balls.

Try roaming around in Pokemon Go to see if you can encounter Sandygast during Sunny or Clear weather. It can also appear in other conditions like Fog. Sometimes, your best bet to finding Sandygast is during events like the previous Slumbering Sands. Otherwise, keep walking, Trainers.

There is also a Shiny variant of Sandygast in Pokemon Go. This style gives it a darker, bolder complexion that fits the overall spookiness of this creature. The best way to catch Shiny Sandygast is to encounter it whenever the pocket monster appears in 3-Star Raids.

Using & Evolving Sandygast

Once you nab Sandygast in Pokemon Go, it’s a solid contender in some battles. As a dual-type, you’ll have to be aware of its numerous weaknesses:

  • Dark
  • Ghost
  • Grass
  • Ice
  • Water

It does have phenomenal resistance against Rock and Bug-types though. So, if you’re up against one of them in Pokemon Go, there’s no harm in throwing out your Sandygast to absorb some of that damage. Astonish and Shadowball are your best movesets to rely on.

Now, if you want an even stronger companion, you should work toward evolving Sandygast into Palossand. It’ll cost you 50 Sandygast Candies, so be prepared to wander around with it as your Buddy for quite some time. The time spent is worth it to have a cool (and creepy, let’s be honest) moving sandcastle as a pal.
