E3 2016: Resident Evil 7 (Reboot?) Confirmed
This article is over 9 years old and may contain outdated information.

Capcom have confirmed the existence of Resident Evil VII with a reveal trailer at Sony’s press conference. The styling of the title suggests it may even be a reboot as the roman numerals are apart of the name only, as opposed to hanging off the side. It seems like it was simply a style choice to pay homage to it being the seventh main entry in the franchise, as the game title reads as Resident Evil.

Moving on from my wild theories, the trailer shows Resident Evil returning to it’s horror roots. So much so that I wasn’t even aware this was a Resident Evil game until I saw the full title pop up. The preview calls back to The Kitchen demo that Capcom had for Playstation VR a year ago. It was widely reported that the demo was terrifying, and one of the scariest VR experiences out there. The video starts with “Before there was The Kitchen.” The preview is in first person, which is a dramatic shift for the Resident Evil series as they have only ever been in third person other than the much maligned Resident Evil: Survivor or the Wii light gun games. The preview begins with a ringing phone informing who we believe to be the protagonist that “she’s back” who or what, we don’t know. The line is a foreboding one, and the player begins to move around the house. Discovering months old food, before noticing someone else is in the house. The preview ended with the protagonist stumbling into a room with a TV lighting up the room.

Nope

Sony confirmed a demo would be available tonight to play for the game, maybe it is The Kitchen demo that was exclusive to press and the conventions? We’ll have to wait and see as of the reporting of this article the demo is not yet available.

I have so many questions. How long can we expect the game to be. Is this a supernatural horror tale? Will there be zombies? Is this single-player only? I want the answers, but something tells me the less we know the better. However, color me entirely intrigued, this is a huge move for Capcom as the game looks like the largest departure it could have taken from Resident Evil 6, honestly I was expecting something more along the lines of the Gamecube reboot. One of the biggest surprises of the show for me.

Be sure to check out the incredible trailer below!
