Barbie Costume Designer Jacqueline Durran has been in the business of designing costumes for movie stars for decades. But despite the star’s experience level, the job doesn’t get any easier. Durran experienced another challenging job while working behind the scenes for the upcoming movie Barbie. In a recent exclusive interview, the Academy Award winner revealed that the most difficult part of the job was dressing up Barbie star Margot Robbie. Nevertheless, it was a job she enjoyed and would love to do again.
‘Barbie’ Costume Designer Talks About the Job’s Challenges
Barbie costume designer Jacqueline Durran may have decades of experience, but she still encounters challenges on the job. In an exclusive interview with E! News, the fashion icon spoke candidly about her difficulties while working on the Barbie set. Durran told the outlet that the most tasking part of the job was dressing up Barbie star Margot Robbie as the iconic doll. However, Durran clarified that it has nothing to do with the movie star, whom she described as “the most perfect human you can imagine.” Instead, Durran relayed that the difficulty was tied to the multiple outfits she had to choose from.
“What was hard was narrowing down all the options and making sense of all the possible looks we could go for,” Durran said.
The Barbie costume designer further explained that another big challenge was Barbie’s costume changes, every time she appeared on the screen. Durran said this led to doing so much in very little time. She then mentioned that they only had 11 hours of prep time before the shoot began. But despite the difficulty, Durran said being the movie’s costume designer was special. According to her, she made sure to choose the strongest looks with the best hair ornaments. Durran said she did so in honor of the doll’s rich history and the “many style iterations” over the years.

It tells the story of Barbie and Ken, who are having the time of their lives in the colorful world of Barbie Land. However, things change when they get a chance to go to the real world. There, they will discover the joys and perils of living among humans. The film will feature many familiar faces, with the lead roles played by Barbie star Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. Other cast members include Will Ferrell, Dua Lipa, Issa Rae, John Cena, etc. The film promises to be worth the watch, given the Barbie costume designer’s reputation and other renowned names.
