Starfield, Bethesda’s first new IP in 25 years, is set to be massive. The hype for the Microsoft exclusive is at an all-time high, and the September 6th release date can’t come soon enough. In the meantime, fans have turned to pouring over the official trailers and announcements, searching for any new details about the game. These reveals from Bethesda have given us a lot to think about! Here are the 6 Starfield features that we are most excited about.

Ship Building

Starfield’s in-depth ship-building mechanic is wild. Rather than take the easy route and provide simple customization tools Bethesda has instead given the players to fully build their ship from the ground up. This includes customizing the interior, your crew, and even the paint job!

It is no doubt that this feature alone will be solely responsible for a significant chunk of the player base. It is worth mentioning that Bethesda has confirmed ship construction to be a late-game feature, though modifications are available early on. This is due mostly to the expensive in-game cost of materials, but considering this is a Bethesda title, its safe to assume an infinite money glitch will be one of Starfield’s greatest accidental features.

Weapon Crafting

Bethesda has confirmed that Fallout 4’s weapon crafting system will be making a return, only this time with some added bells and whistles. A quick look into the system revealed that players will be able to customize attachments such as barrels, grips, optics, and muzzles. This may not seem like a lot but rest assured knowing that there will be tons of guns in Starfield.

In a recent Q&A session, Bethesda also confirmed that there are options to create non-lethal guns. As cool as that is, it seems like a bit of a cop-out for those wanting a passive run.

Space Magic

You read that right – the Starfield Deep Dive from June finished off with a bang. A short clip towards the end of the video shows the player reaching their hand out and freezing everyone in their tracks. Bethesda didn’t elaborate on this whatsoever, but it is wildly exciting nonetheless.

Perhaps Elder Scrolls fans can take some respite from this fact, as Elder Scrolls 6 doesn’t seem like it will be released any time soon. It is safe to space magic is assuredly one of the most mysterious Starfield features. Perhaps it has something to do with that mysterious artifact that the NPCs are always talking about.

Character Creation

In typical Bethesda fashion, Starfield’s character creation is set to be incredibly expansive. The tools at your disposal are more powerful than ever before, allowing players to be deeply meticulous about how their character looks.

But the character builder isn’t just about making sure your character looks their best. For the first time since the early Elder Scrolls games, players will be able to choose a background. Each background offers a few perks to help you out in your journey and add depth to your character.

Along with backgrounds, there is also a huge list of traits to choose from. Traits are entirely optional, and each one comes with a pro and a con, so be sure to choose wisely!

Cities and Settlements

From what we’ve seen and heard, Starfield’s cities are going to be the biggest of any Bethesda game yet. The main settlement, New Atlantis, is reportedly so large that it requires a subway system to travel to its multiple districts! It should be unanimous that the massive cities are one of Starfield’s most enticing features.

So far, there are four confirmed major cities in Starfield, though we have only seen three of them. The details of each one can be found below.

  • New Atlantis: The capital city of the United Colonies. New Atlantis is highly advanced and militarized, and gameplay footage has proved that the city is very selective when it comes to who can enter and leave.
  • Akila City: Akila City has been described by Bethesda as a “loose confederation of three distinct star systems.” The city is reminiscent of the American wild west, and the citizens mostly govern themselves.
  • Neon: Neon is the “Pleasure City” of the settled systems. There is very little government activity in the city, which makes sense considering that its main export is a mind-altering psychedelic.

Base Building

After striking gold with Fallout 4’s base-building mechanics, Bethesda has made the wise decision to include it in Starfield as well. This time, however, the mechanic is considerably more expansive!

Players will be able to build multiple different settlements and assign a unique crew and companions to each location. But these bases aren’t just for looks, because each one also functions as outposts to harvest resources! Bethesda confirmed via tweet that players will be able to establish cargo links between each outpost, allowing you to efficiently transport valuable materials between sites! Out of the many exciting Starfield features, this is one that we are overjoyed to see returning.
