Although many players enjoy playing a morally upstanding hero, some choose a much more sinister path when playing RPGs. Luckily for those players, Starfield gives them the freedom to steal, rob, and of course, pickpocket civilians and foes alike. However, not every Starfield player knows how to start their new, thieving ways. Despite Starfield’s pickpocketing system seeming a bit simple, it can be intimidating to tackle for the first time. For anyone curious, here is how to pickpocket and steal without getting caught in Starfield.

How To Pickpocket In Starfield

Here's how to get started with pickpocketing in Starfield.

Pickpocketing in Starfield is extremely similar to other Bethesda RPGs and follows a few of the same rules. First, to start pickpocketing, players are going to want to unlock the Theft skill. Unlike other Bethesda RPGs, like Skyrim, choosing this perk is necessary for starting your adventures in thievery.

Next, after choosing a target, players will want to enter stealth by pressing the B button for Xbox or the Left CTRL key for PC. Afterwards, by approaching the target and pressing the A button for Xbox or E key on PC, players can access their target’s inventory. Finally, after selecting the item you would like to steal, press the A button or E key once again and your character will take it. These steps almost perfectly follow the same system as Skyrim and Fallout 4 , so fans of those games should feel right at home with Starfield pickpocketing.

How To Get the Best Chances for Stealing

Players can increase their chances through various skills.

While pickpocketing in Starfield each item in their inventory is going to have a color and percentage indicating how hard it is to steal. The percentage will indicate your percent chance of stealing the target item without being caught. The color, on the other hand, indicates relatively the same thing, just with broader categories. Blue indicates a very easy pickpocket, while gray indicates an object that’s impossible to get.

Players can increase their chances of stealing an item in Starfield by stealthing and remaining undetected. For the best chances, Starfield players can invest in Skills in the Social category to boost their odds of pickpocketing. Namely, players will want to upgrade the Theft perk to its max level. This will provide a 50% greater chance to successfully pickpocket. Additionally, it will allow players to pickpocket holstered weapons.

Starfield will be released on September 1st for Early Access and September 6th for its complete release.
