Spider-Manย fans twitch reflexively when they hear the word ‘clone’. Because it brings to mind The Clone Saga, a good storyline that Marvel drove into the ground. Yet, any Spider-Man story with Dan Slott attached is worth the benefit of the doubt. Therefore, fans should be cautiously optimistic about The Clone Conspiracy.

Marvel is taking an interesting approach with Clone Conspiracy because the main plot is not in Spidey’s regular title. While Spidey related titles will cover events in the story arc, the main plot takes place in Clone Conspiracy 1-5. And the preview for issue 1 is as follows.
“The Jackal is back and has conquered death. The Amazing Spider-Man is outmatched by his classic enemyโs army. Does the wall-crawler stand a chance? SHOULD he stand in The Jackalโs way if heโs found the key to eternal life?”
First of all, this does seem a good approach to bringing clones back into Spider-Man. Because the Clone Saga was based on a good idea that Marvel took too far. Basically, an early issue of Spider-Man saw a clone made of Spidey. The issue ended with the clone seemingly being killed. The Clone Saga‘s central idea is ‘what if it was the clone who made it out?’ and ‘What if the real Spider-man was still alive?’
As a result, fan’s minds were blown. We’d been following a clone around for years without him or us knowing it. Yet, the idea’s popularity was the its undoing. Because Marvel extended the plot for too long and the quality took a dive. As a result, Marvel had to salvage the plot by making the clone twist a deception by the Green Goblin.
Whatever twists and turns there are in this new story arc, we’ll have to hope that Marvel doesn’t repeat their past mistakes.
