Super Mario Bros Wonder is already gearing up to be one of the best Switch releases this year. So far, players are already comparing the new Mario game to Tears of the Kingdom and praising the platformer as a game of the year entry. As far as 2D Mario games are concerned, Super Mario Bros Wonder is easily one of the best entries we have had in years. With that being said, this game is a massive departure from the usual style, adding tons of new twists and turns that will keep even long-time fans on their toes. To help ease the transition from the New Super Mario Bros series to now, here are 10 tips to know before starting Super Mario Bros Wonder.

Wonder Flowers Mix Up The Formula

As we have already been shown throughout many of the Super Mario Bros Wonder trailers, the Wonder Flower is a new power-up that completely changes the trajectory of the level. This includes things like bringing pipes to life or causing a stampede. After playing the game, these Wonder Flower events are much more varied and exciting than previously anticipated.

Super Mario Bros Wonder’s Badges Will Help Your Journeys

One of the new mechanics of Super Mario Bros Wonder revolves around badges that can help players complete levels. This includes badges that help you fall slowly, jump up walls, pull in coins and many more. To have the best time overall, you’ll want to experiment with Super Mario Bros. Wonder’s badges to see which ones work the best on each level.

Yoshi Is Easy Mode

If you’re anything like me, seeing Yoshi as his own playable character in Super Mario Bros Wonder was one of the biggest step-ups from previous entries. Though you may want to jump right in and start playing as everyone’s favorite dino, it’s worth noting that Yoshi actually provides some buffs to the player. Much like Nabbit in past Mario games, you won’t take damage from enemies while playing as Yoshi, and you have a short flutter jump. If you’re looking for an easier time overall, Yoshi is a great choice.

Playing Super Mario Bros Wonder Online Is Worth It

One of the biggest selling points that Super Mario Bros Wonder has to offer is its co-op gameplay. While playing online, players can see the ghosts of other players as they complete each level. To some, this may seem like it’ll get in the way of the overall playing experience. However, there are a few benefits to playing Super Mario Bros Wonder online. Besides making each level feel more like a community experience, you can also use player’s standees to save yourself in a pinch.

Keep An Eye Out For Captain Toad

Super Mario Bros Wonder‘s release brings back a classic character that fans have grown to love over the years, Captain Toad. Captain Toad is up to his usual adventuring shenanigans, hidden across the map in various nooks and crannies. Make sure you chat with him if you find him, and you’ll get a reward.

Try Levels Without The Wonder Flower

Although the Wonder Flower is the big, new mechanic that makes Super Mario Bros Wonder special, sometimes the best tip is to ignore the changes and stick with what we’ve learned from previous Mario entries. If you’re feeling up to it, try skipping the Wonder Flower, even when you normally wouldn’t. This may lead to some interesting rewards that you missed.

Secrets Are Plentiful In Each Level

In previous Mario games, while they do have a few secrets and collectibles, the levels never felt too full of things to find. Super Mario Bros Wonder, on the other hand, is chock full of secrets hidden around every corner. Between finding Purple 10-coins, the Wonder Seed, or secret exits, players will have tons to explore. Always make sure that you’re hunting around everywhere in each level and use badges to find previously inaccessible locations.

Much like the levels, Super Mario Bros Wonder also features tons of secrets on each map screen as well. Now that players can walk around in the free-roam map areas, Nintendo has decided to hide little treats for players. Look around for things hidden in the environment of the map if you’re looking for a few extra rewards.

Your new Super Mario Bros Wonder Power-Ups Are Versatile

With the new power-ups of Super Mario Bros Wonder, many players are excited to see what they can do with them. Between the Elephant, Bubble, and Drill power-ups, a great tip for the new release is that Super Mario Bros Wonder’s power-ups have so much more versatility than any other Mario game to date. When playing, you should use every power-up to the fullest and experiment with each power’s abilities.

Lots of Foreground and Background Travel Throughout Super Mario Bros Wonder

Finally, although they showed it off in the trailer, traveling between the foreground and background of Super Mario Bros Wonder is more important than they originally let on. Though this isn’t a major detail, many players thought that this mechanic would only make one brief appearance in the game. However, it seems Nintendo wanted to use this mechanic more, especially since it was supposed to be featured in a previous failed Mario game on the Virtual Boy.
