Nicolas Cage Talks Retirement From Movies and a Career on TV

While Nicolas Cage is on an upward trajectory in film, he wants to do something different.

Nicolas Cage might have returned to his glory days with his movies being strong once again, but he may seek retirement from that area to turn his career toward TV. In a recent interview, the actor is looking for a change so he can “keep mixing it up” and stay “fresh.” After a few more times on the big screen, he could seek time in our living rooms.

Nicolas Cage Looks to the Future of His Career, Which Means Retirement From Movies and a Turn to TV

In an interview with Uproxx, Nicolas Cage talked about his plan to move away from movies. He has a few lined up to work on, including joining forces with big-name actors like Bill Skarsgård for the crime thriller Lords of War. It is all about having that “high note” to leave on before seeing what the future holds.

I don’t want to get stuck in any genre or any performance style. I want to do it all. And I feel that I’ve, at this point – after 45 years of doing this; that in over 100 movies – I feel I’ve pretty much said what I’ve had to say with cinema. And I’d like to leave on a high note and say, “Adios.” I think I have to do maybe three or four more movies before I can get there, and then hopefully switch formats and go into some other way of expressing my acting.

For the actor, that “high note” would have been his current film, A24’s Dream Scenario, in which he is an ordinary guy who appears in everyone’s dreams that goes nightmarishly wrong. Due to signing on to other projects, he will continue this path until he can find the off-ramp. He will become “very severe and very astringent on the selection process moving forward.” Ideally, he is interested in a TV series on a streaming platform due to the time it has for character moments that cannot fit into a film.

I am very interested in immersion streaming with episodic television. I have seen things that can be done now with characters and the time they’re given to express themselves. I saw Bryan Cranston stare at a suitcase for an hour on one episode of Breaking Bad. We don’t have time to do that in a feature film, so maybe television is the next best step for me.

Nicolas Cage was a massive star in the ’80s and ’90s due to movies like Raising Arizona. The new millennium did not look good for the actor with flops and poorly received films. Now, he is on an upward trajectory thanks to dramas like Pig, indie horror films like Mandy, and meta blockbusters like The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent.

Dream Scenario was released on November 22. It is currently still in theaters.
