This article is over 1 years old and may contain outdated information.

The best way to improve your chances of survival is to recruit the most powerful and deadly people around the Koronus Expanse. Thankfully, there are plenty just waiting for you the further you explore. You can only ever bring five with you during missions, however. So, your chosen ground companions in Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader must be reliable. All 10 of your companions bring something great to the table, but some stand out above the others.

S-Tier Rogue Trader Companions

Companion: Cassia

How to Recruit: Chapter One | During the “Secret of the Navis Nobilite” quest

  • Origin: Navigator
  • First Archetype: Officer
  • Romanceable: Yes

Cassia is easily one of the best companions in Warhammer 40K no matter what type of Rogue Trader you will play as. She’s the only Navigator, and as part-officer and part-psyker, she combines unique abilities for potent displays of power. Her Officer class helps her aid teammates by giving them more Action Points. Meanwhile, she always takes a turn first. This way, she can use her talents to lay down serious damage such as putting out bonus wounds.

A-Tier Rogue Trader Companions

Companion: Yrliet

How to Recruit: Chapter Two | During the “World Shapers” quest, speak to her after talking to the governor. She’s found near the gazebo.

  • Origin: Aeldari
  • First Archetype: Operative
  • Romanceable: Yes

Yrliet, our space elf, is a powerhouse of a companion. In honesty, she borderlines between the A and S-tiers. Her ability “In My Sights” is irreplaceable for damaging the enemy. She marks the target and will hit them with 100% on her next turn. It’s a great way to whittle down the enemy and work with your other companions like Cassia.

Companion: Sister Argenta

How to Recruit: During the Prologue

  • Origin: Ministorum Priest
  • First Archetype: Soldier
  • Romanceable: No

At the start of the game, Sister Argenta is a top contender for the best companion in Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader. As a Soldier, her damage is key. She does just as well with a flamer as she does with an automatic weapon. The only reason for ranking her a little lower is because she’s more impressive early game before you recruit other characters.

Companion: Abelard

How to Recruit: During the Prologue

  • Origin: Navy Officer
  • First Archetype: Warrior
  • Romanceable: No

Another early recruit that’s eventually taken over by other companions, Abelard is still solid enough to earn an A-ranking. He’s an incredible tank of a Warrior. That’s why Vanguard is the perfect Tier II Archetype for him. He does even more tank-like damage while absorbing plenty of damage to keep enemies on him and his allies safer.

Companion: Heinrix

How to Recruit: Chapter One | During the mission “Looking for Trouble”

  • Origin: Sanctioned Psyker-Biomancer
  • First Archetype: Warrior
  • Romanceable: Yes

With the right build, Heinrix is a versatile battle tank. He works as an excellent sponge companion in Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader. His Warrior abilities make him familiar to Abelard, but his Biomancy allows him to self-heal. This way, he can keep charging in and recovering just as quickly. Arch-Militant can make for a good Tier II Archetype.

B-Tier Rogue Trader Companions

Companion: Pasqal

How to Recruit: Chapter One | After completing the quest “Machine Spirit Keeper”

  • Origin: Tech-Priest
  • First Archetype: Operative
  • Romanceable: No

Pasqal is a useful companion when you want to cause lasting effects on enemies. He can debuff opponent stats, marking them to help allies cause extra damage. Pasqal has a solid support role, so he can work well with any other companion. On the other hand, he also comes in handy to hack computers.

Companion: Ulfar

How to Recruit: Chapter Three | When you finish the quest “Fury in Chains,” you must convenience the Haemonculus to release him from jail. Otherwise, you will miss recruiting him.

  • Origin: Space Marine
  • First Archeytype: Soldier Arch-Militant hybrid
  • Romanceable: No

Ulfar is a compelling character with his hybrid talents. He’s tough enough to melee enemies quite well. However, to use him and his buffs properly, you’ll have to adapt a lot in battle. It can take some time to learn how best to play him on the field.

Companion: Marazhai

How to Recruit: Chapter Three | During the quest “The Chasm,” you’ll have to convenience him two different times to join your cause.

  • Origin: Drukhari
  • First Archetype: Warrior Assassin
  • Romanceable: No

Our dark space elf doesn’t rank as high as Yrliet, but Marazhai is still a good companion choice. As a Warrior Assassin, he has some moderate protection since he does have to move in close to leave lasting damage. His only problem concerns the other allies. Most of them do more damage before he gets the chance to, which can make him a bit redundant.

C-Tier Rogue Trader Companions

Companion: Jae

How to Recruit: Chapter Two | You’ll see her when you first go to the Liege of Footfall, but you’ll talk to her in the Shadow Quarters during the quest “Persona Non Grata.”

  • Origin: Cold Trader
  • First Archetype: Officer
  • Romanceable: Yes

Jae is a friendly enough companion in Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader, but her skills are surpassed by other characters like Cassia. She does well in the support role, giving another turn for your allies. Plus, she can use Xenos weapons. Overall, she’s a decent companion but doesn’t bring much in terms of uniqueness.

Companion: Idira

How to Recruit: During the Prologue

  • Origin: Unsanctioned Psyker
  • First Archetype: Operative
  • Romanceable: No

With Idira, you can quickly take out large crowds of enemies, a wonderful trait for any companion. However, you do have to use a big mixture of talents if you want to make the most of her. Idira’s ideal if you want mage support on the team, but otherwise, you can handle most of what you face in the game with the higher-ranking companions.

Despite our ranking of the Warhammer 40K companions, you should always choose who works best with your specific Rogue Trader. Perhaps your MC can take up the spot of one of the companions. In any case, you have plenty of friends to choose from to create versatile playthroughs.
