Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is right around the corner. The game, which is the latest in the Final Fantasy VII franchise, will be released on the PlayStation 5 on Feb. 29, 2024. To celebrate, Square Enix will bring its 2005 computer-animated film Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children to Japanese theaters this January. While the company hasn’t announced whether the movie will be screened elsewhere, there are rumors it’ll also hit the U.S. So, how likely is it to come to American theaters? Here’s the deal.

So far, Square Enix has only confirmed the movie will be shown in Japanese theaters from Jan. 19 to Feb. 1. However, fans are convinced it’ll also get a theatrical release in the U.S. Over the past few days, social media users noticed that movie listings for Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children have appeared on various websites like AMC Theatres, Fandango, Regal, and Atom Tickets. Although tickets for the movie aren’t currently on sale, the film is listed as either “coming soon” or to be released on Feb. 21, 2024.

Notably, the movie listings are for the “complete” edition of the film. This version is a director’s cut, which includes extra footage not seen in the original movie, as well as higher quality graphics. It dropped on Blu-ray Disc in 2009 โ€” four years after the original film was released in Japan in 2005.

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children follows protagonist Cloud Strife as he embarks on a mission to save a group of kids from a mysterious illness. The movie takes place two years following the events of Final Fantasy VII. The videogame, which was originally released in 1997, received a remake in 2020 that was highly successful among fans of the franchise. Final Fantasy VII Remake is part of a planned trilogy of games set to continue with the release of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth in February.
