How To Defeat Teostra in Monster Hunter World (Strategies & Weaknesses)

One hell of a fight.

One of the Elder Dragons you’ll face in Monster Hunter World is Teostra, who can be quite challenging if you don’t know its weakness or jump in without a strategy. With it bringing the fury of an active volcano combined with lunging attacks, blast damage, and a lot of explosions, things can become quite hectic for newcomers. However, with some patience, you can tackle this monster in minutes. So, grab your favorite ridiculously big weapon, your best armor, and your Palico, and take a trip to the Elder’s Recess with us.

Monster Hunter World: Teostra Fight Guide

Before we delve into the fight, we must take a look at Teostra’s weakness in Monster Hunter World. By this point, you know you won’t be able to see its weaknesses immediately. You must face it first, grab some tracks, and update your research log. However, to make things easier, below is an image of this monster’s weak points:

As for the elements that work against it, you should bring weapons infused with Water, Ice, and Poison. Another great tip for this fight is to bring a weapon with considerable Stun damage. Here, we choose to bring a Sword and a Shield due to it applying status effects fast and also having stun damage with shield attacks. And, like any other encounter, eat your meal, restock your items, and head toward this monster’s location.

Facing Teostra

If you’re ready to face this monster, you should head to the bottom area of Elder’s Recess, more specifically, inside the volcano; here’s where you’ll find it. As soon as you begin the fight, do not rush in trying to hit it. Contrary to other monsters, this one unleashes a lunging attack as soon as you approach. This applies to every phase of the fight. We recommend taunting it with a slinger shot and waiting for it to come to you. For the first fight before it enrages, we followed this strategy:

  • Stay to the sides of Teostra. It’ll shoot flames out of its mouth, but you can hit it if positioned right.
  • If you have a long weapon like a Longsword, go for the tail. This is another weak spot you can attack while it shoots flames.
  • The Elder’s Recess has a lot of ledges; whenever possible, try to slide down and jump off a ledge to ride the monster. Attack it until it falls down.
  • When the monster falls down, aim for the head. This is another one of Teostra’s weaknesses.

First Enrage

While technically, it has one enrage state, we like to divide it in two because the attack of the second one can be fatal, and we’ll talk about it in a bit. For the first enrage, though, we have some tips.

When you see the monster rage for the first time, it’ll engulf itself in fire, making close-quarter combat much more difficult. Besides, it’ll run around the area and do any of the following moves:

  • It’ll shoot sparks in a straight line that’ll detonate after a brief moment, causing blast damage and building the Blast status on you.
  • Teostra will shoot sparks in an outer circle that’ll detonate after a bit. This is the perfect time to attack its head.
  • A flying wind-up attack that’ll see it lunge at you and do a lot of damage. It can be fatal if you don’t have enough defense or health.

To get it out of its enraged state, we recommend waiting for the outer circle spark attack or whenever it shoots flames in a cone-like move. With our shield, we stunned it with the normal move, and it was a good way to bring it down.

Supernova-like Attack

During its enrage state, it’ll look as if Teostra is going to enrage again. When this happens, it means it is charging its deadliest attack, which is a huge AoE explosion that can cart you. To avoid it, you should run as far away as possible. You could try to make it fling with Dragon Pods, but we advise against it if this is your first time facing the monster.

Once you see Teostra limping or flying slowly, it’ll return to the deepest part of the volcano to sleep. This area is also quite dangerous because some parts of the floor explode and send you flying, leaving you open for attacks.

As long as you dodge at the right times, stick to Teostra’s sides, and aim for its weakness, you won’t have any issue defeating it in Monster Hunter World. You can always call for help, but we recommend sticking to a single-player fight to avoid giving this hellish creature more HP than necessary.
