Anno 1800 Pollution Explained (& How to Lower It)

Can’t leave carbon footprint if you drive instead of walk, right?

Back in the 1800s or during the height of the Industrial Age, human beings started producing even more pollutants in the name of progress. This is something that Anno 1800 captured in its gameplay. But luckily, it’s more manageable here than in real life. Here’s what you need to understand about the Anno 1800 Pollution mechanic and how you can lower it (by lower, we mean offloading the pollutants to sacrificial, dumpster islands, but shush, okay?)

Anno 1800 Pollution Causes

In Anno 1800, there’s a metric or mechanic called City Attractiveness. It can determine how many visitors or tourists will come and spend money. So, in this game, more attractive cities can help with income.

The three things that can make your city attractive are:

  • Culture
  • Nature
  • Festivity

And the detriments to the City Attractiveness metric are:

  • Vulgarity
  • Pollution
  • Instability

Among those three detractors, Pollution is the biggest problem. That’s because your population runs on industrial goods, meaning you’re reliant on factories. Sure enough, the primary cause of Pollution in your city would be factories.

Any building that produces smoke or has a large chimney that spouts smoke will add to the Anno 1800 Pollution metric. That means a population of Artisan and higher can heavily contribute to this Pollution metric since the goods they need are produced by factories.

How To Lower Anno 1800 Pollution

To lower Pollution on your favorite island, just imitate what megacorporations are doing in the modern world. Offload the factories to “dirty kitchen” islands and settlements, then ship the goods they produce back to your main, beautiful island that’s now devoid of pollutants.

Here’s a step-by-step process that’s reliant on the Commuter Pier building.

  1. Pick and colonize a nearby island where you can fit all the factories of the main island that you want to beautify.
  2. Build a Commuter Pier building on both islands. They’ll let you transfer workforce populations.
  3. Transfer all those factories to the second industrial island using the Stamp tool. Or you can just demolish the main island’s factories and rebuild them on the industrial island.
  4. Set up a Trade Route to transfer all the goods from the industrial island to your main island. You’ll need dozens of ships for this.

Lowering Pollution on your main island is an expensive process, so don’t attempt to do it too early on. You can also make use of the Docklands Main Wharf building to reduce the need for factories by simply purchasing industrial goods.

Now, what about the Pollution on the industrial dumpster island? Good question. I’m sure future generations will have an answer and a solution for that. Now, we mustn’t tarry; it’s tea time in our pristine, pollution-free city.
