There was a Halo battle royale?!

Rumors have been circling for some time that a Halo battle royale game was in the pipeline. While neither Microsoft nor 343 Industries ever gave official word on this game, the latest news trickling out is that the game, nicknamed Project Tatanka, has been canceled. The most recent entry to the franchise Halo Infinite has seen solid success by making its multiplayer free-to-play, and it’s possible Microsoft and 343 were hoping to capitalize on that by stepping into the viral genre of battle royale shooters.

The Canceled Halo Battle Royale

The Halo battle royale nicknamed “Project Tatanka” has been known to be in development through Certain Affinity, a studio founded by ex-Bungie employees that has helped develop multiple Halo titles, since 2022. For more than a year, fans of the sci-fi shooter have been waiting on the official announcement to hit the internet. Sadly, it doesn’t appear that announcement will ever come since multiple Xbox insiders have rumored in a recent podcast that Project Tatanka has been canned.

The XboxEra podcast has been a reliable source for rumors relating to Microsoft and 343-related projects in the past, with other outlets like Eurogamer and IGN similarly taking the news (Delivered at around the 2:24:50 mark in the YouTube video) as confirmation of Tatanka’s cancellation. The reasons for the project’s cancellation are unknown. They will likely remain that way since Tatanka never got any official word from Microsoft or 343 Industries. At the same time, Certain Affinity only ever spoke about it in very vague terms.
