  • Why Was Call of Duty NX1 Cancelled?
  • Neversoft’s Cancelled Call of Duty Isn’t Alone On That List
This article is over 1 years old and may contain outdated information.

Surprisingly, after more than a decade, we now have details and info of another cancelledย Call of Dutyย game. What makes this interesting, however, is that the developers behind the scenes for this game were the ones who createdย Tony Hawk’s Pro Skaterย games.ย Call of Duty: Future Warfare, also known asย CoDย NX1ย is the name of this cancelled project, and it’s not the onlyย Call of Dutyย game that has never seen the light of day.

In 1999, Activision acquired a new studio: the California-basedย Neversoft. This studio is best known for working onย the Spider-Man,ย Guitar Heroย andย Tony Hawk’s Pro Skaterย games back in the day. But after the departure of many of Infinity Ward’s staff after releasingย MW2ย 2009, Neversoft was tasked to create a full-fledgedย Call of Dutyย game.

Sounds big, and the game was actually going to achieve some huge goals by being the firstย Call of Dutyย with a futuristic theme, long beforeย Advanced Warfareย andย Infinite Warfare. However, the game was slated to release in 2013, and before that, the Neversoft team focused on the release of Modern Warfare 3. Unfortunately, after Treyarch releasedย Black Ops 2, theย Call of Duty: Future Warfareย plans were set aside in favour ofย Call of Duty: Ghosts.

In fact, many of the character names, designs, and ideas ofย Call of Duty: Ghostsย come fromย CoD NX1. Neversoft co-developedย Ghosts, so they have their fingerprints on the conception of the game. But is this the first time we’re hearing about a cancelledย Call of Dutyย game?

If we look back at the PS3 and PS2 eras, there is info on some unbelievableย Call of Dutyย ideas. For instance, have you ever thought of being one of Julius Caesar’s elite forces in aย Call of Dutyย game? The developers at Vicarious Visions were the team to attempt to bring this idea to life via Call of Duty: Roman Wars;ย allowing players to fight with spears, bows and arrows, and even ride elephants!

There’s even more, with aย Call of Dutyย title called “Tactics”, being the first strategicย CoDย game to be released before 2010. The list goes on with a third-person only, and a Vietnam-themed cancelledย Call of Dutyย games. So with this info, there’s no weird thought on how theย Future Warfareย NX1ย project was shut down by Activision. Many prototypes and ideas have been cancelled in theย Call of Dutyย franchise, including a sequel toย Advanced Warfareย and probably Ghosts.

So, will there ever be aย CoD: Future Warfareย game upcoming release? Short answer: No. The Neversoft team has merged with Infinity Ward since 2014, and the ideas for that game are already used inย Ghosts, and other futuristicย Call of Dutyย titles. Even the name of one ofย CoD NX1’s final missions “Operation Deadbolt” is currently used inย MW3ย 2023 Zombies! So it’s fine to assume thatย Future Warfareย is well and truly dead and buried.

Amir is an absolute Call of Duty nerd, preferring shooter games more than everything. However, he does like to do uppercuts in Mortal Kombat and feel the NOS going through the engines in Need For Speed games.
