Amidst complaints about The Texas Chain Saw Massacre‘s matchmaking and gameplay issues, Gun Media has decided to pull out all the stops to prevent history from repeating itself.

In a last-ditch effort to save a failing game, the publisher has partnered with Japanese game developer Black Tower Studios, creators of Spellbreak.

Friday the 13th’s Messy Lawsuit

For half a decade, Friday the 13th was trapped in a copyright dispute between Victor Miller, the original screenwriter, and Sean S. Cunningham, the original film’s director. Since ownership of the franchise could not be determined at this time, no new content could be made in relation to Friday the 13th until the lawsuit was settled. This included Friday the 13th: The Game, another offspring of Gun Media.

Over the years, Friday the 13th: The Game lost considerable interaction with players who grew bored of the stale content. As a result, Friday the 13th: The Game was delisted on December 31, 2023, and its multiplayer servers will be permanently shut down on December 31, 2024.

Fans are hoping The Texas Chain Saw Massacre doesn’t suffer the same fate, although players are already displeased with a myriad of bugs, glitches, and unbalanced mechanics.

Black Tower Studios’ Involvement

Black Tower Studios took over development duties on Friday The 13th: The Game from IllFonic back in 2018. They created both the Jarvis House and Pinehurst maps, as well as lending a hand with any practical hiccups. Gun Media has now announced that Black Tower Studios will be working on the future DLC content for The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.

There seems to be decidedly mixed reactions from fans, who can’t decide whether this partnership is for better or worse. Surely it can’t get any worse, right? Over the last few months, players have been dropping like flies from The Texas Chain Saw Massacre‘s servers as constant interruptions with gameplay and lobbies held hostage make it harder to enjoy the experience.

Fans Are Divided

Some fans are completely sold by the idea of Black Tower Studios returning to Gun Media’s side, saying “the future looks bright” for both developers.

wow. thats a lot of partners youre pulling in!

future looks bright folks!

Really seems like you guys are putting all the pieces to the puzzle together and building a strong team. Congrats and welcome back, Black Tower! Cheers to a bright future in Texas. 🔪

Others weren’t so easily convinced, picking apart Black Tower’s minor involvement with the previous game and saying TCM is possibly “cooked for everyone.”

history is repeating itself💀

— aaron (@notaaronnn) February 26, 2024

All Black Tower Studios did for Friday the 13th was work on some back-end fixes and clean up etc. Tcm may possibly be cooked everyone!

— Jeff Morris (@_JeffMorrison_) February 26, 2024

Ultimately, only time will tell if The Texas Chain Saw Massacre delivers on the promises it’s made. But if we end up with another Friday the 13th on our hands, Gun Media’s goose may very well be cooked.
