Disney Confirms ‘Moana 2’ Is in Development With New Photo

Time to see how far she’ll go.

Disney has big plans for Moana, and if the new picture is anything to go by, then she’s more than ready. The company officially announced Moana 2 with a trailer last month, confirming that Moana, the princess from the 2016 animated movie that shares her name, would be returning to the silver screen at some point. Now, Disney has shared a never-before-seen photo from its annual shareholders meeting, proving that not only is Moana 2 officially underway, but Moana herself is definitely gearing up for a big, oceanic adventure in her sequel film.

Moana is an animated movie that centers around Moana, an ancient Polynesian princess who’s chosen by the ocean itself to return a sacred relic to Te Fiti, the goddess of nature, and in the process calm Te Ka, a volcanic demon. Auli’i Cravalho starred as the voice of Moana, alongside Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as Maui, a showboating demigod who Moana enlists to help her cross the ocean to Te Fiti. The movie also starred Rachel House, Temuera Morrison, Christopher Jackson, Jemaine Clement, and Nicole Scherzinger in various voice roles, and Lin-Manuel Miranda won a Grammy for his work on the movie.

A sequel to Moana has reportedly been in the works for a while, but it wasn’t always a movie. In 2020, Disney announced that they would be making a Moana TV series for Disney+, but that idea was eventually scrapped in favor of a feature film instead. Moana 2 got its official announcement trailer last month, giving fans a 16-second sneak-peek of the new film. In the new trailer, Moana steps onto a picturesque new island and she blows a conch horn – probably a callback to the conch shell in the first movie – before everything fades to black. The trailer promises that Moana 2 will be in theaters this November, and it also features a celebratory whoop from Maui, possibly hinting at Dwayne Johnson’s return.

Now, in a new photo released from Disney’s annual shareholder’s meeting, Moana herself can be seen gearing up for some kind of oceanic adventure, with a massive, multi-eyed, brand-new sea creature dominating the background. Of course, Disney’s keeping quiet about details surrounding the photo and what it means about the sequel, and they’ll probably stay this way until the movie actually comes out.

Until then, we can only speculate and, following Moana’s advice from her first movie, watch how far she’ll go.
