The start of Fallout 4 is like a gut punch. You’re given little room to gather your bearings before the happy-go-lucky outlook is kicked aside and you’re forced to engage with the unforgiving Wasteland. So, weapons are just as vital as finding food and water that aren’t contaminated. In such a setting, ammo isn’t plentiful. Thankfully, Fallout 4 allows you to craft ammo so you’re prepared no matter what.

The usual means to snag ammo in Fallout 4 included looting and buying them with your caps. But why would you theoretically throw away those precious bottle caps when you can instead make ammo?

To craft ammo in Fallout 4, you must meet two requirements:

  • Unlock the Gun Nut perk
  • Find/craft a Weapons Workbench.

Weapons Workbenches are available throughout the Commonwealth, so you don’t have to rely only on crafting one yourself. You can find some sitting around in the Wasteland or other settlements. It’s perfect since, as long as you have the materials, you can craft and keep your ammo stocked up no matter where you go.

Types Of Ammo You Can Craft in Fallout 4

You can craft the majority of ammunition needed for basic weapons. It’s even possible to craft upgraded ammunition types like armor-piercing rounds. You can make it as long as you have a recipe for it.

However, you cannot craft certain specialty ammunition like mini-nukes or energy weapon ammunition. Still, what you can make in Fallout 4 greatly outweighs what you cannot.

Materials Needed to Craft Ammo

You may not want to hunt down ammo in Fallout 4, but you’ll want to embrace the loot goblin within to track down crafting materials. Materials needed vary based on the type of recipe you have. But you’ll generally use these types of items:

  • Copper
  • Fertilizer
  • Lead
  • Steel

If you have the Contraptions Workshop add-on for Fallout 4, you can craft ammo at a grander scale. This add-on gives you the chance to use the Ammunition Plant. It’s a manufacturing construct where you can increase your ammo crafting. You’ll need a rank in both the Gun Nut and Science perks to build it along with the following materials:

  • Circuitry
  • Gears
  • Rubber
  • Steel

Once up and running, you can mass-produce ammo types, producing 10 every 10 seconds as long as you have the materials and electricity. It’s the ideal way to ensure you’ll never encounter a situation when you’re low on ammo. Otherwise, you can still use the Weapons Workshop well enough.

Fallout 4 is available on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox.
