Styx: Shards of Darkness, the sequel to the underrated and generally forgotten Styx: Master of Shadows, releases this week. It follows the exploits of the titular Styx, a goblin thief who must infiltrate the city of Korangar and unearth all sorts of mysterious secrets there. Right on schedule, developer Cyanide has a new trailer. Check out the release trailer for Styx: Shards of Darkness below:

The last game in the series had some silly moments, but it was still a relatively serious take on the first person stealth platformer. If your first reaction to that trailer wasn’t “Hmm, so Styx is a goblin Deadpool,” then you weren’t paying attention.

Overall, the idea looks pretty solid. If they can patch up some of the issues that recent takes on the genre (2014’s Thief re-imagining being a prime example), then Styx: Shards of Darkness could become a surprise hit.

Will Styx make hilarious, fourth-wall breaking comments throughout the game become distracting and annoying? Probably. But a goblin thief who takes regular jabs at Assassin’s Creed is alright in my book.

But will there be bales of hay to break your fall?

Like in the previous game, Styx will have the ability to use stealth or fight guards to achieve his goals. He can create clones of himself, use ropes and grappling hooks to reach high vantage points, lay traps for enemies, and even turn briefly invisible. Styx: Shards of Darkness will even include a co-op mode, with one player controlling Styx and the other controlling one of his clones.

Styx: Shards of Darkness releases on March 14th for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Stay tuned for more details as they become available.

Excited for a return to the fantasy world of Styx the goblin? What do you think of the new, snarky take on the character? Let us know in the comments below.
