With the death of the captain, the New London has lost its leader, and as the steward, it’s your job to ensure the city’s survival. As if dealing with the cold and lack of resources isn’t enough, several factions wish to push their agenda. While veteran players are unlikely to be phased by these troubles, new players may struggle to keep the city running. In that case, there are some tips and tricks you may want to check out to ensure you can complete the Frostpunk 2 campaign.

Smart District Placement

The best tips in Frostpunk 2 is to be careful with your district placement.

The first tip that you can follow in Frostpunk 2 is to be mindful of your District placement. There are five District that you will unlock once you start Chapter 1 in the campaign:

  • Housing
  • Food
  • Extraction
  • Industrial
  • Logistics

Although they may feel the same, some of these Districts do not like to be close to each other. While placing these buildings closely can generate Heat, if you force two incompatible structures together you can cause Squalor or Disease.

To avoid this issue, you can only group Housing with Food. On the other hand, feel free to place Extraction, Industrial, and Logistics closely. This Frostpunk 2 trick should help you obtain extra Heat while avoiding the negative effects of having dense Districts.

Pass Laws & Regulations

One great trick in Frostpunk 2 to manage the city is by passing laws and regulations.

While constructing buildings is the core of Frostpunk 2, you also need to pass Laws and Regulations to manage New London. This feature becomes available after you build the Council Chamber during Chapter 1.

There are numerous laws and regulations that you can pass when the council is in session. Personally, I suggest unlocking Guided Voting as soon as possible under the Rule section. This will increase your chances of getting your proposal accepted.

Generally, you want to suggest a new law whenever available. If you keep failing to pass regulations, it may trigger distress and anxiety in your citizens which may cause in-fighting and reducing your Trust level.

Research New Ideas

As your city grows in Frostpunk 2, you will need even more structures to keep it from collapsing. While only building Districts are fine initially, you must also unlock other buildings to keep up with resource demand and manage negative status effects.

If you are playing the campaign, your skill tree will be limited according to the pivotal decisions you have made. On the other hand, the Utopia mode lets you build whatever you wish as long as you’ve researched the idea in the Idea Tree.

I recommend unlocking Filtration House and Hospital first to manage Squalor and Disease. You can also research Housing Blocks if you struggle to keep up with housing demand despite building a ton of Housing Districts.

Explore Frostland

You can explore Frostland to gain resources in Frostpunk 2.

While managing your city is your main priority, you can still explore the wider world in Frostpunk 2. You can access Frostland by building a Logistics District on the compass tile at the edge of your map.

Each area will be assigned a certain level of danger, and you usually want to avoid the treacherous ones. If you want to fully explore the overworld, I recommend researching the Survivalist’s Headquarters building under the Frostland section in the Idea Tree.

Besides building outposts and recruiting more people, you may also find other areas where you can build a new colony. During the campaign, you can find the Old Dreadnaught and the Winterhome. Although they can give you more resource nodes, you also need to manage more settlements, increasing the difficulty.

Use Emergency Shifts & Overdrive

You can use Emergency Shift to gain more resources.

Initially, I was quite reluctant to use Emergency Shifts and Overdrive. This is because of the bad connotation this move causes. However, surviving the Whiteout is difficult, and when you are cornered, don’t be afraid to use drastic measures.

You can activate Emergency Shifts in all Districts to force workers to produce more resources. On the other hand, you can put your generator on Overdrive if you are not getting enough Heat for your city. Remember to stop Emergency Shifts and Overdrive when it’s safe, or else your citizens will get sick, and your generator will break.
