One of the very first puzzle locations you’ll encounter in the Silent Hill 2 remake is Wood Side Apartments. This is the location where protagonist James meets Laura and Eddie. However, despite Silent Hill 2 being almost an exact remake of the original, the apartments are a different kind of hell. Let’s take a look at how to get through the Wood Side Apartments in Silent Hill 2.

Getting Through Wood Side Apartments

Walking into the apartment building, walk towards the only room on the first floor with a light. Here, you’ll find a puzzle titled the Coin Cabinet, the first of many save points, and a building map. With this done, immediately head upstairs to the second floor using the staircase closest to the front desk. To make things easier to find in the dark, locate Room 202 using your map to find the Flashlight pinned to a mannequin.

In this same room, you’ll encounter the Mannequin enemy for the first time. With the monster defeated, you can grab the Chute Courtyard Key. You can inspect the dummy the flashlight was pinned to, but nothing will happen.

Now, you should have these in your possession:

  • Flashlight.
  • Chute Courtyard Key.
  • Wood Side Apartment Map.

With the Chute Courtyard Key in hand, head back down to the first floor and locate the door that leads to the courtyard on your map. You’ll now be able to access an outside area using the key. Here, you can inspect the building’s garbage chute and find it to be backed up.

You’ll find a cart near the garbage chute that needs to be pushed toward an open window in the courtyard. More specifically, push it towards the window of Apartment 112. Inside, you’ll find a newspaper with important information. In this new area on the first floor, make sure you go to the end of the hallway in which Apartment 109 is located. You will see a cutscene of James reaching for a key, only for it to be kicked away by a little girl.

After this, go ahead and unlock the courtyard door and make your way back to the front desk. When you arrive, you’ll hear a little girl laughing, letting you know that the east hallway is now open. With this door open, you can now head to the area where the key that the girl kicked away from you is. The key is called the 2F Hallway Key.

The Golden Apple

You could choose to do this when you’re exploring the courtyard, but head over to Apartment 109 and locate a wardrobe in the back of the room. The wardrobe will have strange handles, but examining them causes a golden apple to fall from the hand. After this, go to Apartment 102 and locate the Strange Photo before using the 2F Hallway Key to open the locked hallway on the second floor.

At this point, you should have these new items in your possession:

  • 2F Hallway Key.
  • Strange Photo.

To the Second Floor

With most of the apartments and rooms on this floor inaccessible, you can only go to a few places. First, head over to Apartment 213 and use the hole in the wall inside to get to another hallway. Despite there being another locked door to a staircase in this hallway, walk past it and head to Apartment 217 to find a handgun inside a red shopping cart.

Return to Apartment 213 to find that the room has changed and that Apartment 212 Key will become available for pickup. Go to Apartment 212 and use the balcony to get to Apartment 210. Here, you’ll be able to access a set of stairs on the outside. Pay attention because there’s a lever you can pull to drop the staircase and get access to the first floor from here.

After that, head to Apartment 206 and use the Golden Apple from earlier on the wardrobe in the back. You’ll then be able to move the wardrobe to the side to access a room with a safe.

To make things easier, this is the combination to the safe in Apartment 206:

  • Easy – Right 15, Left 11, Right 13.
  • Standard – Right 13, Left 7, Right 11.

With the safe open, you’ll get the Silver Coin with an image of a man and the Steel Key. You should now have the following:

  • A handgun.
  • Apartment 212 (it will be removed after using it).
  • Silver Coin.
  • Steel Key.

Eddie and the Pool

With all four of the above, go through the hallway next to Apartment 205 and grab the 2F Small Staircase Key. Use this key on the staircase at the very back of the building to unlock it and find another save point.

With a new area of the first floor available, head to Apartment 116 to encounter Eddie for the first time. You’ll also be able to get to the pool from here, where you’ll notice a red baby carriage in the center. Avoid all of the Lying Figures, snatch the Golden Coin with an image of a snake on it, and get out of there.

Back to the Third Floor

With the second coin in hand, immediately head to the third floor using the back staircase. The third floor is more of a maze than the others, so head over to Apartment 311 using the hole in the wall and use the hole in that apartment to get to Apartment 309. Here, you’ll have access to the hallway with Apartment 310 in it. Go to the end of the hallway to find part of Apartment 310 exposed with a Strange Note on the desk.

Walk back into the hallway, head to the other half of Apartment 310, and use the balcony to reach Apartment 312. Here, you’ll find the Sinister Note and a crawlspace that leads to the trash chute room immediately next door. Inside, unlock the door and grab the case of Canned Juice from the table. Then, use the case in the garbage chute to unclog it. Immediately head to the first-floor courtyard and pick up the Golden coin with the image of a woman on it.

Now you should have the following:

  • Strange Note.
  • Sinister Note.
  • Golden Coin.

Solving the Coin Cabinet

Now that you have everything you need to solve the Coin Cabinet, head back to the front desk of the apartment building. Using the three coins, solve the riddle that appears above the puzzle. The coins will need to go in this order:

  • Silver Man, Golden Maiden, Bronze Flower.
  • Silver Blade, Golden Maiden, Bronze Snake.
  • Bronze Snake, Golden Grave, Silver Man.

For the riddle’s last part, place the Silver Man or Bronze Snake in the spot above to earn the Apartment 201 Key.

Pyramid Head

Use your new key to go to Apartment 201 where you’ll witness a cutscene involving Pyramid Head and the Mannequin Figure enemies you’ve seen everywhere after examining a Handkerchief. Once the cutscene is over, pick up the handkerchief and leave to the Bluecreek Apartments using the red door in the room.
