Spider-Man 2’s PC Announcement Sparks Outrage, But the Missing Story DLC Isn’t the Issue

Can the PlayStation brand ‘be greater together’ with PC?

Insomniac has shadow-dropped the Spider-Man 2 PC release date, announcing it will be available on January 30, 2025. But instead of sharing the excitement with fellow gamers, an outrage has spun a web of discontent among PlayStation fans. The core issue isn’t even the missing story DLC, which many had anticipated post-launch. Or because you’ll be forced to sign up and link a PlayStation Network account. No, no, instead, it’s all about the ‘sense of betrayal’ that another exclusive is now set to appear on another platform.

While Spider-Man 2 PC release means more players get to experience the game, PlayStation loyalists feel like their expensive hardware is losing relevance. The argument? With every formerly exclusive game making its way to PC, from God of War to Horizon Zero Dawn, owning a PS5 Pro seems less essential.

Many had splurged on the PS5 or pre-ordering the even pricier $700 PS5 Pro, under the assumption that exclusives would make it worth their investment. But with each new PC announcement, some argue the need for a high-end console diminishes.

On the PC announcement trailer YouTube video, PlayStation stans (PlayStantions?) have already echoed their frustrations. “PS5 Era: remasters, remakes and PC ports. Congrats Sony,” wrote a commenter with 500 likes.

A comment chimed in with, “This settles it; I don’t need a PS5 Pro.” “[…] My worst mistake was buying a PS5. I will never buy a Sony console again,” lamented another.

X users join in on the occasion as well, “What the f*** is the point of having a PS5 anymore.” Another quoted the announcement tweet and said, “[…] This not a good decision. What’s the point of buying a PS5 nowadays if every PS game is gonna eventually come to PC???”

Some were mostly mad that Insomniac and Sony would rather make a PC port first before releasing a story DLC like its predecessor. “AND Y’ALL CANCELED DLCS TO CATER PC CROWD [clown emoji] [clown emoji] [clown emoji] [clown emoji],” tweeted a fan.

Still, as mentioned above, the Spider-Man 2 PC release announcement comes with other baggage. According to a massive leak in 2023, Insomniac seems to be planning to add several story updates to the game. But as the company didn’t officially announce the roadmap, it’s safe to say that the plan was scrapped early. The PlayStation Network account requirement for the PC ports also ended up banning Helldivers 2 in more than 170 countries.

In the end, the frustration from PlayStation fans underscores a growing concern about the relevance of console exclusivity in a rapidly changing gaming landscape. Sony’s move toward expanding its audience through PC ports might make business sense. But with Spider-Man 2 joining the list of PlayStation games released on PC, one question is clear. What’s left to define the PS5 Pro — or even PS6 — as a must-have for diehard Sony supporters?
