Except for our protagonist, the rest of your party members can take up any classes or jobs they want in Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake. While the game will give you a basic team consisting of a Mage, Priest, and Warrior, you can change them whenever you want. Of course, you need to know what each vocation can offer to your party. Although the game tries to be balanced, some jobs are still better than the rest.

Besides the Hero class, which can only be learned by the protagonist, there are nine jobs that you can use in Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake. Eight of them will be available right at the start, but Sage is the sole vocation that can only be accessed by upgrading your party member. Here is the ranking:

SMonster Wrangler, Thief, Sage
AWarrior, Martial Artist, Mage
BPriest
CGadabout, Merchant

The three best classes in Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake are Monster Wrangler, Thief, and Sage. I highly recommend having Monster Wrangler on your team since you can easily track and capture docile monsters for the Monster Tournament. This job not only has AoE attacks but can also provide team-wide healing.

Thief is another great starter vocation since it steals from enemies during a battle. It also has the Nose for Treasure ability, which allows you to detect nearby treasures in the area. This class has plenty of AoE physical attacks, but I suggest upgrading this vocation to Sage when you can.

Sage is the best job in the game besides Hero. This vocation has access to all the spells from Mage and Priest. The problem is that it won’t be available for you from the get-go since you need to either upgrade the Gadabout class or use the Words of Wisdom key item.

A Rank

In the A rank, we have Warrior, Martial Artist, and Mage. Picking these classes as your starting vocations isn’t a bad idea though they are not as good as the S rank. Warrior is a decent option for physical attackers but it has low speed compared to others.

Martial Artist is quite similar to Warrior since they both focus on physical attacks. They are rather hard to use in the early game, but this vocation has the highest CRIT rate, and their speeds are better than Warrior.

Mages are your go-to magic damage dealer, but their biggest weakness is their low HP. If you’re not careful, they’ll be the first to get killed in battles. This vocation has high Wisdom stats, but their other stats tend to stay low, so they’re a bit of a cannon glass.

B Rank

Priest is a B Rank vocation.

Priest is the only class with a B rank in Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake. Personally, I don’t recommend having one in your party since the Hero can easily handle healing. They don’t offer much else except for pure support. Once their MP is gone, then they’re next to useless. It’s better to just wait for Sage and upgrade other classes. Of course, feel free to use this vocation if you want to feel extra secure during exploration.

Gadabout and Merchant are arguably the worst class in the game. Gadabout is somewhat better since it can naturally upgrade to Sage vocation. The main gimmick of this job is that it doesn’t listen to your command at higher levels. Although this vocation can buff your team, this wild unit can also just pull a “prank” on you and hurt the party, like summoning more monsters or preventing the Hero from attacking.

Merchant is less horrible than Gadabout, but this vocation isn’t that useful. They can help you gain more money, but their stats are only slightly better than Priest’s, and they can’t use any good spells.
