The countdown to December 6 just got a little more exciting for Marvel fans, as Marvel Games and NetEase have revealed a series of updates for their upcoming PvP shooter, Marvel Rivals. Chief among these announcements is the inclusion of Hawkeye in the gameโs launch roster, alongside a brand-new Wakanda map, a stylish Imperial Protocol costume series, and details on the gameโs initial season, “Doom’s Rise.”
Fans of Clint Barton, a.k.a. Hawkeye, will be pleased to see his addition to Marvel Rivals. As one of Earthโs mightiest heroes, Hawkeye brings his unparalleled archery skills to the battlefield, a perfect fit for the game’s focus on unique hero abilities and dynamic teamplay. While the reveal trailer teases some of his slick moves, itโs the broader implications of his inclusion that stand out.
As I wrote in my Gamescom preview earlier this year, Marvel Rivals’ use of familiar Marvel characters sets it apart from the typical hero shooter. “Even without trying, Marvel Rivalsโ familiar characters make it far more accessible than other hero shooters,” I noted. With players already intuitively understanding their favorite heroes’ powers, the learning curve is softened, making the game a strong entry point for both casual players and seasoned Marvel enthusiasts.
Another major reveal is the Birnin TโChalla map, set in the heart of Wakandaโs intergalactic empire. The map blends traditional African tribal aesthetics with cutting-edge futuristic technology, offering a setting that is as visually stunning as it is tactically diverse. The emphasis on destructible environments and strategic verticality should provide thrilling opportunities for high-stakes plays.
The launch season, titled “Doom’s Rise”, will see players diving into a narrative involving Doctor Doomโs chaotic time experiments, offering 33 heroes, 8 maps, and even a Conquest mode. The roadmap suggests a brisk pace, with new heroes, cosmetics, and events dropping regularly to maintain momentum post-launchโa crucial factor in a genre often plagued by early player drop-off.
One of the more intriguing aspects of Season 0 is the Imperial Protocol costume series, which combines Afrofuturistic designs with each hero’s unique aesthetic. Highlights include Black Pantherโs regal Galactic Claw, Captain Americaโs sleek Galactic Talon, and Mantisโ sharp Galactic Wings. Fans can look forward to Hawkeye’s own costume reveal soon, likely to showcase his iconic precision with a Wakandan twist.
Marvel Rivals has had a lot to prove in the run-up to its launch. When I played the closed beta during Gamescom, I was initially skeptical. “The game felt like a straightforward reskin of Overwatch,” I admitted, but I rather changed my tune after spending more time with it. The lower time-to-kill (TTK) mechanics and the satisfaction of its team-up abilities won me over. Now, with the addition of Hawkeye, the Wakandan map, and Doom’s Rise on the horizon, Marvel Rivals is shaping up to be a polished, content-rich experience at launch, bolstered by its free-to-play model and fan-favorite characters.
