Catelynn Lowell and Tyler Baltierra are sounding off once again about their adoption experience. As the season premiere of Teen Mom: The Next Chapter approaches, the couple is talking about how they’ve realized they were left in the dark about a lot of the adoption process and potential outcomes. Catelynn says she’s gone down “some major black holes” and is upset by what she’s found.
Catelynn & Tyler Completely Cut Off From Communicating With Carly
The Teen Mom couple has been vocal about their feelings regarding the adoption of their oldest daughter, Carly. Catelynn Lowell gave birth to Carly when she was just 16 years old. She and Tyler were the only Teen Mom OG couple to choose adoption for their child.
Throughout the adoption process, Catelynn and Tyler were assured that they would be able to maintain a relationship with Carly. However, the paperwork they signed allowed the adoptive parents, Brandon and Teresa Davis, to cut off communication after Carly turned five years old if they deemed it appropriate or necessary.
For a while, Catelynn Lowell and Tyler Baltierra visited Carly regularly. On Teen Mom, viewers saw what a trainwreck some of those visits were. At one point, Catelynn showed up hours late to meet her daughter so that she could put together a scrapbook.
Several months ago, Catelynn revealed to fans that her number was blocked. She’s not been able to contact Carly or her adoptive parents. “They definitely have 100 percent closed the adoption,” Catelynn told E! News. “I’m still blocked and they recently told me to quit sending gifts because it was inappropriate and uncalled for, just a whole bunch of things.”
Catelynn Lowell Wishes She Knew Better Then
Since then, Catelynn and Tyler have been loud about disapproving of Carly’s parents’ decision. They have been trying to demand an explanation and they want to know if this is what Carly wants. Of course, they aren’t owed anything at this point, but Catelynn admitted that she’s “not in a very good place” regarding her relationship with Carly.

“I think that culturally, adoption is only talked about in a positive light,” the Teen Mom star said. “And so when we started talking about the hardships that we have and the emotions that we go through that are hard, people came at us and they were like, well, ‘What do you mean? You should be grateful.’ And it’s like, well, adoption isn’t just all cupcakes and rainbows. There’s trauma, there is hurt, there’s sadness, there’s what ifs, there’s so many hard sides of it too.”
Additionally, Catelynn says that she’s been down “some major black holes” in relation to adoption and adoptees. She feels she wasn’t properly educated on their entire process before signing the papers at such a young age.
“There was so much about adoptees, the statistics of adoptees, statistics of birth parents, and things that I was not educated about or even told about,” she said. “And I think that’s what upset me the most was, nobody fully educated me on the whole scope of the decision that I was making.”
Now, she and her husband, Tyler Baltierra, are using their platforms to educate people about adoption. Fans will see more of Catelynn Lowell and Tyler Baltierra’s story play out in this season of The Next Chapter.
