Twisted Metal season two just dropped its first teaser, and it looks like a fast-paced thrill ride. The first season became one of the most celebrated video game adaptations of all time, but some pointed out its distance from the source material. Oddly enough, Season One didn’t focus on the tournament that makes up the game’s story. Thankfully, Season Two seems primed to launch Anthony Mackie’s John Doe into a classic death race tournament.
Twisted Metal Season Two Might Make Fans’ Wishes Come True
Twisted Metal Season Two follows the more familiar structure of one of the hit car-combat games. Anthony Mackie’s John Doe is a new rogue element, but he’s entering familiar territory for fans of the franchise. Doe and his love interest, Quiet (Stephanie Beatriz, Brooklyn Nine-Nine), will race against 16 other competitors in the Twisted Metal tournament. The event’s orchestrator is a devilish threat called Calypso (Anthony Carrigan, Barry), but he’s offering a prize too great to turn down. The tournament’s winner will have any wish granted, providing potentially infinite power through victory. You can accurately guess that the overwhelming majority of these wishes don’t work out. This season seems a bit more supernatural than its predecessor, but there are still plenty of Easter eggs for fans.
The teaser drop comes with a bit of insider information that will help illuminate Twisted Metal season two. We see several characters from the games, many of whom take on new forms. A quick montage depicts Raven, Mr. Grimm, and Dollface, among others. The show’s logline from NBC Universal explains that the characters have shifted around slightly. Dollface, for example, is now John Doe’s long-lost sister. We also have some hints as to the crew behind the camera. Showrunner Michael Jonathan Smith is still riding high from Cobra Kai. We also know the directors helming each episode. Phil Sgriccia of The Boys and Supernatural fame has his hands on four episodes. Bill Benz, returning talent from season one, also has four. Iain MacDonald (Poker Face) and Bertie Ellwood (Hawkeye) each get a couple as well. It’s a solid crop of talent in charge of this season.
Twisted Metal Season Two will bring the action and comedy of the games to the small screen with even more accuracy. The show’s anarchic energy feels very fitting, but its biggest strength is its cast. Season Two will see the show expand in all directions, unleashing car-based chaos onto an eager crowd.
