‘Greatest Protest Sign Ever?’ Spotted at Manhattan Tesla Protest: ‘Get the T Shirts Made’

A sign spotted at a Tesla protest in Manhattan yesterday has some TikTokers asking if it might be the “greatest protest sign ever?” It features Donald Trump, J.D. Vance, Elon Musk, Vladimir Putin, and Benjamin Netanyahu. Trump, Musk, and Vance have unflinchingly backed Israel and Russia. They’ve also repeatedly taken actions to secure the interests of those countries above the well-being of Americans. Watching Trump and his allies support the Palestinian genocide as well as Russia’s war on Ukraine? It bothered some creative New Yorkers enough to create a powerful (and disturbing) sign.

Between the secret police abductions and the gutting of federal departments, NYC has plenty to protest. The so-called “greatest protest sign ever” in Manhattan featured the four politicians and Tesla CEO in Nazi uniforms. Drawing a direct parallel to Nazism is the obvious step, given how comfortable Musk is with the Nazi salute and supporting Germany’s far-right AfD party, still, seeing those five public figures arranged mug-shot style in black and white uniforms? It sets a definite tone.

A TikTok by u/devinhermanson about the so-called greatest protest sign in Manhattan received over 70k likes and many supportive comments. “Fantastic sign. Get the T shirts made,” said one commenter. Another mourned the country that used to be, at least for a privileged few, saying,

Great job. Sad but true. America is not a great country anymore. But I’m glad 🤔proud that there are still good American people who standing up against Trump and his gang members

Of course, whether the historic recasting makes this particular protest sign in Manhattan the greatest of all time is an empty question. What matters is what the sign says and what conversations it might provoke. America has long refused to confront its history of white supremacy and xenophobia. If the so-called “greatest protest sign” has one flaw, it might be that it gives too little credit to the U.S.’s racist history. Regardless, it’s a banner that brought smiles and cheers in NYC.
