Yesterday, drinks and tacos flew during a clash outside the National in downtown Dallas. A TikToker captured the incident as two young women faced off against two older men outside the historic hotel. Omitting the start of the fight, the video dives straight into the fray. In it, one of the young women repeatedly yelled, “What?” as one of the men yelled back at her. Things then escalated when both women threw their drinks at the men. When one of the men swung his luggage in response, it was the tacos’ turn to fly as one woman sent her bag sailing. If everything’s bigger in Texas, that includes the drama, too.
Thankfully, it appears that no one was seriously hurt during the altercation. The same probably can’t be said about the tacos. While throwing tomatoes at Nazis may be the right thing to do, pelting other people with food isn’t usually a great choice. If nothing else, it’s a waste of tasty treats. Even in a city like Dallas that is overflowing with good food spots, maybe don’t launch your to-go order like an ICBM. That said, both sides were swinging during the downtown altercation. Without more context, one can only judge so much.
A TikTok by cavanaughdesigned about the Texas taco incident received over 1k likes. It also received plenty of comments condemning the fight and food waste. “I know she hella mad she just bought that food and it went to the ground๐ญ๐,” one commenter said. Another struggled to see how someone with tacos could be that upset in the first place, saying,
“How she that mad w tacos in hand ๐ฉ I wouldโve been skipping and blushing right to the crib ๐ Lmaoo [Sic]”
For its ritzy reputation, the National probably doesn’t want food fights on its doorstep. It’d be nice if the tacos sacrificed during this Dallas clash at least led to some productive conversation. Texas faces real challenges, from low wages and underfunded social programs to overpolicing. Less infighting and more solidarity might give Dallas residents some much-needed grace at a time when the country offers little.
