Is the devil ready to cry again? Maybe not, but Hideki Kamiya certainly is — just a little bit. The Devil May Cry creator recently took to his personal YouTube channel to reflect on the series that started the stylish action game trend. In between answering questions from fans and nostalgia, Kamiya reveals he’s absolutely down to remake the original Devil May Cry. If Capcom ever gives him the green light.
“As for a Devil May Cry remake — of course I’d love to do that […] Devil May Cry is burned into my heart,” Kamiya answered @sparda5773’s question. He reminisced that he was ‘super depressed’ when he made the game back in 2001, not long after a devastating breakup. Ever wondered why Dante was so edgy? And why the cringeworthy “I should have been the one to fill your dark soul with light” line even exist? Well, now you know.
Kamiya admits he doesn’t usually revisit his old games, but sometimes he’ll catch a gameplay clip and think, “Yeah, this really does feel like a 24-year-old game design.” Now, with advances in modern game design and tech, he’s confident he could give the legendary demon slayer a serious glow-up. Not to mention that Kamiya is working on the Okami sequel, chances are high for this project to pass through.
“Capcom — please leave it to me,” he said while doing a bow to the camera. Then, not missing a beat, he added: “Also, let me handle Viewtiful Joe too. Let’s do Viewtiful Joe!” You can watch him answering the question in the video below at 4:35 mark.
Whether Capcom listens is another story. But Kamiya isn’t the only one stirring up Devil May Cry remake buzz. Daniel Southworth, the voice of Vergil himself, recently teased fans during a panel. The actor mentioned he’d recorded lines for a game where he was asked to do the ‘younger Vergil voice.’
“I don’t want to say any titles or anything, because I’m known for my spilling the beans,” he said, nervously glancing at co-hosts, “But they asked me to do my voice, the way it was, way back in the 2004 or whatever.” That’s pretty much when Devil May Cry 3 came out — a game centered around Vergil and Dante’s sibling rivalry.
So, is a full-blown original Devil May Cry remake actually happening? Hopefully, with how popular the Netflix anime is right now. Or maybe Kamiya is just reminiscing about his past heartbreak. One thing is clear, though: if Capcom decides to do it, Kamiya’s ready to deliver a jackpot.
